Subject: A&W Restaurants

Of all the Fast Food restaursnts out there, A&W has to be my favourite. I did after all take my screen name from an item on their menu ;)
A&W differs between Canada and the United States ...
CANADIAN A&W AMERICAN A&W

In Canada, A&W's have items on their menu known as "The Burger Family", a bunch of different types of burgers named after roles in a family (Baby Burger, Mama Burger, Teen Burger, Papa Burger and a Grandpa Burger). In the mid 80s, they were taken off the menu when A&W began popping up in food courts in Shopping Malls across Canada. After a 15 year hiatus, The Burger Family re-emerged in 2000 due to the increasing re-popularity of retro items. To re-promote them, they did these great commercials on TV where this family takes a Teen Burger to their son in the hospital who'd just woken up from a 3 year coma. The first thing he says is "Wow! They brought the Burger Family back?" ;D

As a kid, I REALLY, REALLY wanted one of those mugs. I remember thinking that I could just take one home with me but my mother wouldn't let me. Sometimes I really hated the fact that my mother was just so d@mned honorable. >:( ;D ;D

Looks like America is getting on the "family" bandwagon as well.

I had to laugh when I heard the radio commerical for A&W today for the first time. It said that the "Papa Burger" was "All American Food". Not according to my sources! :o ::) ;D

I did too! I thought they were ours to keep after we were finished with our drink. I always got the barbeque sandwich when we went. Yummy! :)

all of our local A&W restaurants are coupled up with Long John Silver's restaurants (in the same building). I like their french fries...but I am not crazy about their burgers. Of course...their rootbeer is great in one of those frosted mugs!

The Burger Family is purely Canadian. In the golden days of A&W, they had them in the States, but as far as I know, they originated in Canada. The Papa Burger was first introduced in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and In 1960, A&W Food Services of Canada was granted a Registered Trademark for the Papa Burger

I went to A&W when I went to Singapore (there was actually an A&W in an old converted paddlesteamer!) a few years ago. Don't remember much of the food, but we do have A&W Root Beer and other soft drinks here (all imported, of course).

I used to get the Mama burger. I feel they have changed though :(
I have an original drive-thru by my work, and nothing tastes the same from when I was a little kid. I also noticed the name changes on the menu.

I know what you mean. The food is so very different tasting than it was years ago. Whenever I eat a Teen Burger, it's not nearly

I love A & W, it brings back great memories for me. I remember my mother worked as a car - hop at one in the 70's.

Root beer served in a frosty mug with a Mama burger and onion rings in what I always order.

^ I'm not sure if they are from Canada or U.S. (I just got the photos from the internet)
Like I said, they just bring back great memories for me. When I see a photo of a A&W mug, it reminds me of when our whole family jumped in the car and the girl in a brown & orange polyester uniform came over and placed the orange tray heaping with burgers & root beer on the window of our '69 Impala. - Good Times.

I love their root beer floats and chili dogs. There's a joint A&W/Long John Silver's out here, but that's the only A&W I've seen in a long time.

Tuesday's were Coney Dog days in the 80s! 2 for the price of one! I loved A&W - it epitomises 80s fast food for me. In my neighbourhood, a kid's party was nothing without the A&W bear. ;D

I usually go for the Teen Burger, with onion rings and a root beer. Very nice. Pricey though, for fast food.

Over the years, it has gotten quite pricey :(
I can remember just a few years ago when a small poutine was $2.79. Now it's like $3.49. Even the Price of a Whistle Dog rose from $2.99 to over $3.00 :(

Pricey? Nah, I bought 2 Mama burgers for $4 on Saturday. (Of course it was a special deal to get the customers in)

Even here in the heart of Québec, a poutine costs too much. I mean, it's delicious, but it's just fries, gravy and cheese for chrissake.

A&W Canada has launched the "long lost" Uncle Burger, 5oz of Sirloin Beef. Just gave one a try tonight and WOW! If not the best tasting burger I've had in a looooong time 8)

I'm not a big Root Beer fan. I usually get a Chocolate Milk to go with my meal, and I always upsize the fries to a Poutine or sometimes Onion Rings
I love A&W so much, as this whole messageboard knows by now, I took my user name from an item on their menu LOL

Is that why you put the AW bear as the retro icon of the week ;) What is a whistle dog, this is one I am not familiar with at A&W, is it a Canadian thing???

Hot Dog with cheese, bacon and relish. You can't get them at American A&Ws

The A&W in the city in which I live was combined with a Taco-Time, and it closed several months ago, possibly as a result of the faltering economy. :( However, in two neighboring cities (actually small but steadily growing towns), there are two old-school drive-ins, one of which I nearly got kicked out of for smoking the tires on my mom's 1987 Buick GNX in the parking lot of but ended up with a new manager, who did not object to me. If and when I ever get the restoration on my Lancia completed, I am planning on taking it to one of the two A&W drive-ins on one of the "cruise nights" that are set up from May to October every year. 8)
As for other areas near where I live, the other A&Ws are combined with gas stations and have food that is noticeably inferior to that of the two drive-ins that I mentioned above.

I just tried one for the first time yesterday, I wasn't disappointed at all but next time I go to A & W I will stick to my old standby, the Mama Burger with cheese!
