I noticed there are a lot of things like that-the Binford tool box-a reference to Tim Allen's show Home Improvement. I think it was the bear who made a reference to F.A.O. Schwarz, which was the store in the movie Big starring Tom Hanks. I'm sure there are others.

Yeah, the second one was good. I hate to say this but the last two actually made me cry.  :-[ I HATE good-bye scenes. They ALWAYS make me cry. (I could blame it on hormones-yeah, yeah that's what it is. That is my story and I'm sticking with it.)

I bought the movie because it is one of my absolutely all-time favorites.

We were watching at my SIL and she asked if I wanted the subtitles on. I told her it didn't matter because I know every line by heart anyway.

Hulu just debuted a six-part series called "McCartney 3,2,1" where cool record producer Rick Rubin (who has produced everybody from the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Geto Boys, and Run-DMC to Johnny Cash, Donovan and Tom Petty) interviews (or rather, mostly listens while McCartney talks) Paul McCartney. It's filmed in a very atmospheric way. It's great. Even at this late date McCartney oozes charisma and coolness. A must see!

I bought a CD many, many moons ago called Pure Moods and it has that song on it. I heard the song on that CD before I saw the movie so I didn't realized that it was from the movie. I just knew that I loved the song. (BTW the Pure Moods is an EXCELLENT album. I HIGHLY recommend it. You would like it-it has Onya & Tubular Bells and other great tunes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pure_Moods    I have the 1997 re-release version.)

The South Westerlies on Acorn. It is about a small town in Ireland that is having a major debate whether to allow a wind farm off their coast.

I know the Beatles had I don't know how many wonderful songs but I think Let It Be is up there in terms of favorites-definitely in the top three if not THE most favorite.

Half liked it. Not trying to give any of the storyline away, firstly it took me a while to appreciate it was a black comedy, secondly, the film involves a meteor heading towards earth with a 100% impact, and it was made interesting when with the non-believers, etc. to compare it with the pandemic of today, and thirdly, I loved the ending...

At the start of the pandemic I saw "Contagion" (2011), and just looked it is still on Netflix, I may watch it again, for comparison reasons.

As a longtime fan of the three main Lucille Ball TV series (I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy) I am wondering what this sudden resurgence in interest in the 70 year old history of the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz is. First "Being The Ricardos", now this. I won't watch "Being The Ricardos", by the way. I don't like fictionalized accounts, played by actors, of actual figures from recent history. Especially figures that I am a fan of. I didn't watch the "I Walk The Line" movie about Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash for the same reason. I'd rather watch the plentiful footage of the actual people.

I'm just thinking, perhaps the renewed interest is because the personal and professional lives of Lucy and Desi were so intertwined, and they were a married couple who also PLAYED a married couple on TV. Lucille Ball even had a baby (Desi Arnaz Jr) the same day  the episode where the  fictional Lucy Ricardo gave birth to "Little Ricky" aired. Up to that point the most watched TV episode in the short history of TV. Shortly thereafter, Lucy and the real Desi Jr. appeared on the cover of "TV Guide".  Many people thought the child actor playing "Little Ricky" was the actual son of the Arnaz's. This you-never-know-what's-real-and-what-isn't, hall of mirrors type thing perfectly suits today's postmodern, post-reality world.

Oh yes, there was a decline in quality with each successive show. But, like many others I have heard from, I "grew up with" the 1960s Lucy Show and have a fondness for it. It seemed GREAT to me then. The other thing I like is the utter "60s-ness" of it. The first couple of seasons very much reflected the Kennedy-era early 60s (the Lucy character actually visits the White House in one episode and an actor is employed to imitate Kennedy's voice of screen), and in later seasons the more psychedelic mid-60s (she even hangs out with the hippies on sunset strip in one episode). Of course, as I was "growing up" with "The Lucy Show", "I Love Lucy" was in endless reruns, so I was experiencing that simultaneously. And "Here's Lucy" which started in 1968, basically just picked up exactly where "The Lucy Show" left off. I'm not sure people realize now just how dominant Lucille Ball was in the 1960s. She even won two successive Emmys for "The Lucy Show" in 1967 and 1968. She also appeared on every other TV show in creation and made movies like "Yours, Mine & Ours". When did she sleep?

As for "Mame", I think everybody realizes that was a mistake. I even remember bits appearing in gossip columns and such implying that it was a dud, BEFORE the movie was even released!

I do remember Yours, Mine, & Ours. I haven't seen it in a long time but I remember loving it.

I remember one ep and I can't remember if it was the Lucy Show or Here's Lucy where Lucie was in a band with her friends and they were talking about playing "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window."

Carlos told me that the dance scene reminded him of another dance in 1942 where a white guy met a Puerto Rican woman. The dance was to celebrate the American Invasion of Puerto Rico at Guinca in 1898. (Yup, they celebrate the invasion.) He wasn't a member of a gang but part of the U.S. Coast Guard (a gang? perhaps. lol) I do believe it was love at first sight. But, it didn't end tragically. They got married and had two kids. They were together until she died when she in her 80s. He died when he was in his 90s.

Those two are Carlos' parents.

It is that scene (in the 1961 original version), the hokey-pokey style mix and match dance, that contains my favourite shot of the film, when Tony first sees Maria, and the edges of the frame are out of focus, only seeing Maria clearly centre of the frame

I just watched West Side Story on HBO Max last night. Way better than The Power of the Dog. They also have the original, which I haven't seen in years.

Last thing I watched on Netflix: the first episodes of Cowboy Bebop (live action) and Squid Game. Bebop, the cold open was a little cartoony/Tarantino, but it found its rhythm. I'm still blown away by Squid Game. :o

I watched that last week. It was cute. I would rate it on a scale of 1-10: About a 5.


As for us, we did watch Mr. Holland's Opus for the first time in I don't know how long. I wanted a feel-good movie and that fit the bill.

We also watched an ep of Murdock Mysteries (on Acorn), an ep of Bridgerton, & started watching Downton Abbey. We have never watched that before.

What cracked me up about Bridgerton, it takes place in early 18th century. There was a ball scene and they are dancing to Material Girl.  ;D ;D

Cute yes, but I could not get into it properly, but can understand the principle of the story of the film which would go above the heads of younger viewers.

Just watching it now, on your recommendation. Very interesting indeed. Although I found the device of using fake people to lip synch to the actual voices on the audio tapes to be a bit off-putting. Many of the "actors" don't really "look like" the voices, if you know what I mean. Especially with well known people with distinctive voices and personalities like John Huston. At times I found myself looking away from the actors to just hear the audio, as it originally was on the tapes.

The Martha Mitchell Effect
Those of us in the US "of a certain age" will remember Martha Mitchell, a pivotal figure in the whole Watergate scandal.  In today's world she would be called a "whistleblower". This documentary is a trip back to the early 70s for sure!

"D.B. Cooper Where Are You?" 

The D.B. Cooper story is endlessly interesting, but this 4 part series seems like a glossy rehash of all the other documentaries (and there are millions) I've seen over the years. All the usual suspects (and footage) are dredged up. On the other hand, the early 1970s style graphics and soundtrack are terrific, and the series (especially pt. 1) will be an eye opener for those who would like to know how different early 70s air travel was from today.

Yup, the dogdy antiques dealer played by Ian McShane. Yeah, it is an older show but we enjoyed it. But I always get confused when watching Brit shows with cars. I have to keep reminding myself that the driver is on the opposite side. Going off on a tangent: Did you have issues with it when you were over here?

Not really. As long as you have a car with the steering wheel on the correct side for that country the driver just needs to be next to the centre line. We had just one day very early on when Dai turned out of the driveway and onto the wrong side of the road. Thankfully no other cars were around, and we quickly realised.

It is much harder taking a car from here across to mainland Europe. I can still remember chanting the mantra in Sweden “drive on the right and turn on the lights”

We watched that last night, too. It was cute.

But, it ALWAYS bothers me when people ask the question, "Do our cats love us?" A DUH! They are highly intelligent beings. To think they are incapable of love is absurd. They may PRETEND that they only love us because we feed them but they really do. We see it every time we come home from a long trip. They are VERY happy to see us.

We watched both Hocus Pocus movies last night on Disney+. We LOVE the first one and watch it every Halloween. The second one scored about a C+ at best. There was NO story to it. The only reason why it scored that high was because it had Bette, Sarah, & Kathy in it. Otherwise, it wasn't worth it at all.

We finished The Kominsky Method. How can you go wrong with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito making a cameo. Alan Arkin is also in it along with many other names. Good show.

We just started watching Wednesday. I'm enjoying it. The funny thing is, it supposed to take place in a town called Jericho, Vermont-even though it wasn't filmed there. We know people who live in Jericho and have been there several times. It really is a nice town.

"A Day at the Beach" (1970)

This one of Roman Polanski's forgotten gems which was previously thought lost. It received a low key theatrical push on its release due to the murder of Polanski s wife and the desire not to cash in on Polanski s name being involved with the lurid Manson murders. The story is a hauntingly accurate and bleak look at alcoholism in which Bernie (Mark Burns) takes his daughter Winnie (Beatie Edney) out for a day at the beach. Peter Sellers co-stars as a gay stall owner in one of his most inventive roles. Working in Europe on this film, this film saved Roman Polanski's life.

A biography of my old favorite Leonard Cohen, as seen though the lens of his composition "Hallelujah", a once ignored song from an album his record company (Columbia) wouldn't even release in this country, through the labyrinthian twists, turns and back roads the song took to becoming the standard it is today. Though, as I have said countless times, possibly the most misunderstood "standard" that ever existed. This documentary does a reasonably decent job of untangling much of the confusion.

A few of my sisters are "Disney Adults'-especially my late sister. Her daughter had got a tattoo of the Mickey Mouse ears in her honor after she died.

I admit that I do have a subscription to Disney+ without any kids in my house. I did so last year when they starting airing Hamilton. I can't tell you how many times I watched that. There have been a few other things that I watched on the channel but I keep going back to Hamilton (and Encanto).

The other night I started to watch Moulin Rouge on Tubi. I then realized that it was late and figured I would watch the the rest of the movie another day. Well, I figured I would finish watching it tonight. But the movie disappeared!  :o I don't know what happened. It was there two nights ago and now it is not. So I won't be able to finish.

So instead, I watched a movie I haven't seen in a long time-Star Wars, the original Chapter IV A New Hope on Disney +.  As I was watching, I was having flashbacks of the very first time I saw it at a very crowded theatre with my sister & our cousins in Tulsa, OK in 1977. I remember everyone cheering when Darth Vader was blasted away at the end. (Yeah, a little spoiler alert but I figured most people have seen it.) I just found it funny thinking of the first time because I used to own it on VHS and have watched it I don't know how many times.

Things come and go on Tubi, just like they do on all streaming channels. In fact, they even have a "leaving soon" category. Pretty strange that it happened right in the middle of you watching something though.

I finished the newest season of Sex Education and tonight I was looking for something new to watch. I turned on Hulu and saw Rocky Horror Picture Show. Why not? I haven't watched that in a long time. Of course it is a bit different watching it at home as opposed to watching it at the theatre. I didn't throw rice but I did to the Time Warp and of course yelling all the lines and singing all the songs.

Really brings back memories.

Sounds like a good program!  I knew Harry Nilsson had friendships with at least John Lennon; Nilsson was interviewed at one of the Beatlefests I attended in the early 80's, and he was selling a charity specialty record for the sake of Lennon who'd been murdered by then (I'm sure I still have that 45, it's in with my other 45s).

They mentioned that in the movie-he was advocating against gun violence. Yeah, nothing has changed since the '80s.  ::)

Yes, and John Lennon produced Nilsson's album "Pussy Cats" in 1974 during the so-called "lost weekend" when Lennon was separated from Yoko and whooping it up in L.A. getting drunk with Nilsson and Keith Moon. It's not the best album any of them ever did, it's got a bit of an air of whiskey about it and lurches around a bit. An interesting artifact of the times though.

Oh-and for those of you looking for "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" types of LSD clues...notice the children's blocks "D" and "S" with a RUG between them. That is, D-R-U-G-S.  :o  ;)

I have been watching the Magicians on Netflix. It originally was a Syfi show. We watched the first few eps but couldn't get into it. Then I decided to give it another try. I still don't know how to rate it but I am continuing to watch it so there is that. It is not bad but I can't say it is great.

I'm re-watching season 1 on Amazon Prime and almost finished it.  Thing is, whereas last month season 2 was free with Prime, suddenly Prime started charging for season 2 this month.  If I understand right, now seasons 1 and 3 are included with Prime but not season 2.  Weird  ::)

The good thing is that it's always free on Roku...  :)

This is par for the course with Prime. They are constantly doing it. On more than one occasion I was watching a free series that they suddenly started charging for halfway through. One wonders if they do it on purpose on an individual basis to extract more money out of people. They have also done the reverse of this and made things free that they had been charging for. It's very confusing. In relation to this, I have also noticed the price of merchandise on Amazon going mysteriously up and down depending on the rate of how much I might look it at before purchasing. There is something nefarious afoot with that company.  :o

If you love the original Good Burger movie or any of the All That sketches, you'll love Good Burger 2.

Honor Society is a smartly written teen comedy (David A. Goodman) in the vein of Clueless and Means Girls. It stars Angourie Rice (Betty Brant from Marvel) and Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin from Stranger Things).

I was curious of this film for it had a checked production history, at first it was to be Sam Peckinpah as director, he pulled out after reading the first script, secondly Stanley Kubrick was brought in as director, with the film starring Spencer Tracy. For reasons unknown Kubrick stepped down two weeks before shooting would begin, and Marlon Brando stepped in as director and to star in it too. One good thing for the film was that it received an Academy Award nomination in the Best Cinematography.

Of course you realize that "black comedy" is a modern term and did not exist at the time the film was made. So there's an element of  "presentism" in describing it as such. But there are strong elements of social satire present in it's harsh criticism of the film industry of the day.

I'm watching Beyond Oak Island on the History Channel. I get frustrated with it because they seem to get close to some of this treasure and then they will say, "Ok, we have to stop for today and will have to come back another day." And they don't follow up. What happened? Did they find it? It just leaves me frustrated. I hope they do follow up on some of these stories in later eps.

If you can get Oak Island I recommend it. It is "reality t.v." only it is real. They are searching for treasure on Oak Island in Nova Scotia. They are finding all sorts of interesting artifacts. But so far, they haven't found "the mother lode."

I was thinking of rewatching it again a few months ago but it is a long movie so I was going to save it for when I had the time but never got back to it. I will soon.

I saw this in the theatre when it first came out. My mother took my birthday party to see it. I loved it but I'm not sure how my friends did. Those were the days when you could take a party out to the movies (and we didn't have a lot of money back then). Now, it's hard to just take your family out without taking out a loan.

"Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget". The 2023 British stop-motion animated comedy film directed by Sam Fell from a screenplay written by Karey Kirkpatrick, John O'Farrell, and Rachel Tunnard, based on a story conceived by Kirkpatrick and O'Farrell, it is the A sequel to "Chicken Run" (2000).

In truth we watch it several times, we adore the film. And watch out for Feather McGraw in the film.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver - December 3-17, 2023. I'm finally caught up. Oliver is much more up my alley. He put on blast: The lack of organ donor regulations, organizations putting people's bodies donated to science in museums in Oklahoma, and the lack of railroad regulations (Complete with Thomas/Shining Time Station/Ringo jokes, and a perfect stop-motion parody of a Thomas cartoon to illustrate his point.). He also gleefully teased Disney about Steamboat Willie entering the public domain and threatening to use 1928 Mickey.

Night Train (Hulu). Written and produced by a good friend of my Simply Scripts screenwriting community, CJ Walley. I've interacted with him at least once. The movie is mostly good, but drags in a few spots. It's also less of an action film than advertised. It's more of a crime-ish drama.

I used to watch Polically Incorrect with Bill Maher and enjoyed it-well depending on who was on. I love John Oliver but don't watch too often. Only here or there. I do watch Stephen Cobert's monologues on YouTube and every now and again A Closer Look with Seth Meyers.

Stranger Things - "The Upside Down" and "Mad Max" (rewatches)

Murder Drones (indie cartoon on YouTube) - Ep. 2 and 3. Finally, three episodes in, the show has finally hit its stride. Previously, this was my least favorite of the Big Four Indie Cartoons (Hazbin Hotel, Lackadaisy, The Amazing Digital Circus, Murder Drones).

Back when I was in school, I took a bowling class down there for credit. Our final exam pitted students against one another. In my case I was bowling against the instructor, who kept complaining about my bowling style. Finally I had enough of that, especially since I was scoring better than him. As far as I'm concerned, the 1968 original is the only version. I couldn't even get past the preview of the remake. Steve McQueen was so damn COOL in the original.  8)

Prank Encounters - "Mist Demeanor" (Netflix)  This is a prank show side project created and produced by Gaten Matarazzo. It's a bit like Scare Tactics. Sort of Stranger Pranks, or Prankster Things. This prank involved rotting fruits at a factory and an otherworldly mist. One of the few times that the target openly recognized Gaten. "We're on an episode of f--king Stranger Things!" "You're on my show, Prank Encounters!"  ;D Only two more episodes, which I'll probably watch back to back.

The Nanny - "Curse of the Grandmas" (Max) - This was actually a pretty sweet episode. Fran's pissed that Mr. Sheffield forgot her one-year anniversary. Meanwhile, Red Robin scout Gracie keeps getting assigned grandmothers who keep dying until Fran sets her up with Grandma Yetta. And someone wants to hire the butler, Niles.

I finally finished Prank Encounters with the final two episodes. The first being a sequel to a season 1 prank involving a mad plastic surgeon trying to recreate his deceased wife. Now he's escaped from the sanitarium. The other, the series finale, was the graveyard shift at a historical site built on an ancient burial ground. Hilarity ensues.

Seinfeld - "The Stranded" (Netflix) - Pretty average episode overall. Had some fun moments.

History of the World - Part II - First two episodes (Hulu) - We finally got our Hitler on Ice. Don't forget about A Viking Funeral and Jews in Space. Until then:

Over the years, I have always judged a film on how good it is by thinking to myself on how soon do I wish to watch it again, the sooner the film better it is, if you get my meaning. On watching "Fiddler on the Roof" it was for me to watch it straightaway. but circumstances stopped that day. I am tempted to watched it after the film I am watching now.
"Fiddler on the Roof" is on live TV right now, but I will watch on catch-up, for I am already watching  a different film on the Sam catch-up service.

Stranger Things - "The Polliwog" (rewatch)

The SAG Awards - To my surprise TIL the Windows 10 Netflix app doesn't support live-streaming. I've long used the app because Firefox maxes out at 720p, whereas the app has 1080p and Dolby audio. I only have 1080p anyway, so no need for Microsoft Edge's 4K streaming. Luckily Chrome streams Netflix in 1080p, so that's what I went with. Oppenheimer and Succession were the big winners. The Last of Us won TV stunts and Actor for Pedro Pascal. Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One got the film stunts award. It was mostly predictable, but fun. :)

Two 1990s comedies set in the 1800s starring beloved overweight comedians in posthumous starring roles: Wagons East! (Pluto) and Almost Heroes (Roku Channel).

I'd seen Wagons East! once before, but forgot most of it. I decided to watch it again on John Candy's death anniversary, and because Richard Lewis recently died, also of a heart attack. It's not quite as funny as Candy's classics, his Uncle Bucks, his Spaceballs, PTA, Vacation. I actually liked Almost Heroes better. It had funnier, more consistent jokes. And Farley shows up in  the opening scene whereas Candy takes about a half hour to arrive. Heroes seems to have gotten more completed before Farley's death, so no Fake Shemping or having him absent for large swaths of the movie.

I think Heroes may have had the stronger ensemble, with Chris Guest regular (and Candy friend and collaborator) Eugene Levy.

Last night I discovered that Acorn now has Season 17 of Murdoch Mysteries (yay!)-well, starting to get them. They only drop one new show a week.The new season (which is a 2 parter) was picking up on the cliffhanger of the last season. Since it has been I don't know how long since I saw it, I rewatched it. Actually that was a 2 parter, too so I watched the last 2 eps of Season 16. So tonight I will probably start the new season.

Damsel (Netflix) - This is a must-see film. An action-packed fantasy epic in which Millie Bobby Brown turns the damsel-in-distress trope on its ear. She acts the hell out of this movie. Angela Bassett and Robyn Wright are great too. And Ray Winstone is terrific.

Godzilla Raids Again (Max). It's a much lesser film than the original, but it was nice to see Takashi Shimura return.

Oppenheimer (Peacock). I thought I'd own the Blu-ray by now, but I had to settle for Peacock. It's a must see and well worth the hype.

Crossroads (Netflix) - Better than I remembered. Britney is actually a very good actress. The film was actually funnier than I remembered, but still as dark/dramatic. In 2002, Britney was one of the most controversial and hated people in the world. In 2024, after her conservatorship saga and bombshell memoir, her reputation seems to have improved among her naysayers. Why is Crossroads *just now* debuting on streaming, why has it never been on Blu-ray, and why is the DVD out of print? If it ever does come to Blu-ray, it's mine.  ;D Never again to be a lost film!

When You Finish Saving the World (Netflix) - An A24 film that has only just now escaped from PVOD hell and made its streaming debut. Still not on Blu-ray, curiously, as A24 films usually get Blu-ray releases through Lionsgate. Also weird is that this is on Netflix instead of Max, considering A24 signed a big deal with them back in December. Maybe it's because it stars Finn Wolfhard? This is Jesse Eisenberg's directorial debut. Wolfhard's character, Ziggy, can be a lot to take, but he's terrific in the role. Julianne Moore is good.

My life has been pretty crazy and chaotic lately, but (semi?) settling down. (But you have to remember there's never a "zero" in this family.) So streaming has taken a big hit, as has my energy to some extent. But I did manage to watch Fern Brady: Autistic Bikini Queen on Netflix. This is the first I've heard of her, and she's hilarious. She's definitely high-functioning, like me. She's a hoot. As the show went on, I focused a little less on her autism and more on her Scottish accent. She has another special on Tubi that I might check out.

Eurovision (Peacock) - Before the final there was the shocker that the Netherlands' Joost Klein's "Europapa" (one I really liked) was disqualified after Klein threatened a camerawoman. Ultimately, Switzerland's Nemo won by breaking "The Code," winning the hearts of the jury and the public alike. They are the first non-binary Eurovision winner, and Switzerland's first win since Celine Dion in 1988.

Seinfeld - "The PEZ Dispenser" (Netflix). Certainly enjoyed Julia and Jason in this episode. The Polar Bear ("Pouch envy") was a gem. Elizabeth Morehead (no relation) was good.

I tried to watch Piranha last night on Peacock, but my energy was just zapped. Very well made Corman cheapie so far.

Battle Beyond the Stars (Peacock). Finally mustered up enough energy to watch something. This felt like a two-act story. There was no "second" act. It just cut to the chase. But James Cameron's effects work and James Horner's score were impressive. John Saxon was a pretty good villain. Richard Thomas and Earl Bowen were also good. Sybil Danning was decent.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (Max)

Euphoria (Max) - I've now gone full circle and rewatched S2 E1, which I originally watched for the actor Daeg Faerch, who has a small non-speaking role in this episode. The cinematography (35mm Ektachrome) is masterful, and the acting is great - especially from Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Sydney Sweeney Jacob Elordi, and the late Angus Cloud. Epic needle-drops too.

Stranger Things - The Spy (rewatch) (Netflix) - Noah Schnapp is chilling here. And Paul Reiser does a wonderful job of trying to remedy the situation. I just rewatched STranger Things - "The Lost Sister." This is the episode that everybody hates, and... I just don't get it. At all. I love this episode! Easily one of the best episodes of season 2. It's a great showcase for Eleven and for Millie.  It's the origin of one of her signature catchphrases, which is also her first curse word. (Eleven's, not Millie's. Go back to BBC's Intruders!  ;D) Eleven/Jane (Millie) and Kali (Linnea Berthelsen) have great chemistry, and the gang are fun(shine). I like Dottie and Funshine. This episode is also home to a fun coincidence: "Runaway" by Bon Jovi plays on the soundtrack as Eleven first arrives in Chicago and gets off the bus. There's also Punky Brewster on the TV and a piece of the Escape from New York score on the soundtrack. Can't go wrong with John Carpenter.

I just rewatched STranger Things - "The Lost Sister." This is the episode that everybody hates, and... I just don't get it. At all. I love this episode! Easily one of the best episodes of season 2. It's a great showcase for Eleven and for Millie.


I feel the same way about the notorious "The Great Vegetable Rebellion" episode of "Lost In Space". Everybody hates it, including the cast, but I like it.

Stranger Things - "The Mind Flayer" (rewatch)

My streaming has slowed down significantly as I've been editing/color grading a short film.

Stranger Things - "The Gate." That wraps up season 2. Lots of moments that gave me a tear, a chuckle, a gasp, a fright, a thrill, and fuzzies in my heart. The Snow Ball Dance still gets me.

Watching Slings & Arrows on Acorn. I have never heard of it until my niece suggested it to me last weekend. It is a Canadian show. It is about a Shakespeare theatre company. Having been in theatre, I get a lot of what they are dealing with-the divas, the bad actors, the curtian going up before you are ready, etc. I am enjoying it.

Stranger Things - "The Case of the Missing Lifeguard" (rewatch)

I've had quite a 13-year adventure with calibrating my TV. It's a Sanyo and I just could never nail the color, especially red... until Saturday night when I discovered that the saturation was way too high. Red was always too bright. I'd compare it to my TV-as-PC-monitor (also a Sanyo, running in PC Mode and calibrated), my only frame of reference. I used the AVS HD 709 calibration to dial everything in. Now my displays match. Red looks like red, and white doesn't hurt my eyes.

This is my first time watching Stranger Things on my big TV properly calibrated. Everything was bright and colorful, but naturally so.

The Sopranos - "Proshai, Livushka"

How do you pay your respects to somebody who hate, who hated everybody? This one hit home for me. My grandmother who raise me was abusive and controlling. I was literally her slave for most of my life with her. There were many days I'd wish she'd just die or that I could get away from her. Similarly, she felt the same way about her own mother. And Tony feels the same way about his. He doesn't mince words when he speaks to Dr. Melfi. Tony and Livia's final words to each other were quite tense. Even Livia wished she would just die already. (Nancy Marchand had actually died eight months earlier and was resurrected via CGI and archive footage here.)

At the Soprano House after the funeral, everyone eventually takes their masks and filters off and lets the words fly. "She estranged us from our son for I don't know how many Christmases." Tony confronted Janice for stating her intentions to skip the funeral. Reminded me of how I wanted to speak up and expose Grandma at her memorial and that I was merely there for catharsis.

Meanwhile, we learn that Tony doesn't approve of Meadow's Black Jewish friend, a film student.

We're All Going to the World's Fair (Max). Very unconventional structure. The film is almost entirely epistolary, told via YouTube videos and Creepypastas. Slow connection? Buffering issues? No, it's just the movie's aesthetic. It was actually quite good. The lead, Anna Cobb, is a good actress here. The other actor was good, too.

I imagine I Saw the TV Glow will be more conventional.

I Saw the TV Glow (Max). More conventional than We're All Going to the World's Fair. In 1996 a boy and a girl bond over this hip new cult TV show called The Pink Opaque. But was it just a show? It kind of reminded me of my SUmmer of Stranger Things two years ago. I still haven't shaken off the show. It had a big effect on me, especially season 4, and it's extended to this very day. It took me three years (2019) to watch the show because I didn't have a good sound system in 2016. Then we moved in 2017 and my cousin invited me to stream Black Panther on Netflix in 2019.

I love the little homages to Nickelodeon/SNICK/Nick at Nite. The Pink Opaque seems like a hybrid of Pete & Pete, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Stranger Things, Power Rangers (?) and Georges Melies. There's a Monster of the Week who's clearly supposed to be Mr. Tastee. And Pete & Pete themselves, Mike Maronna and Danny Tamberelli have cameos.

They got the coming-of-age stuff and the actors' performances and chemistry down pat. Jane Schoenbrun (they/them) is an incredible filmmaker. Both films have jaw-dropping cinematography.

Watched the brand new two part Ken Burns documentary on Leonardo Da Vinci. Technically it was on PBS, but I missed the second part so I streamed it from the PBS website. His multi-part documentary on the Vietnam War was excellent, but I found this one presented in kind of a tedious way. And how do you do a documentary on Da Vinci and give only about two minutes to the Mona Lisa?

Stranger Things - "The Flayed" (rewatch). I hadn't watched the show in over two months. The acting was solid in this episode -- especially David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Maya Hawke and Grigori. Jake Busey was actually pretty menacing. Only three more episodes left of season 3, then I can relive season 4. I don't know if I'm emotionally ready.  :\'(  ;D I got Hounds of Love on vinyl for Christmas that year and I still haven't listened to it yet. (Never mind that it's a miracle I can get anything watched, read or listened to.)

I started rewatching Foods That Built America on the History Channel. I have watched eps here and there but this time I started from the beginning so some eps I have seen before and some I haven't.

It really is an interesting show. It tells how the foods we know got it start, like Coke, McDonald's, Hershey's, Pizza Hut, Frito-Lay, Kellogg's, Kraft, Nabisco, and so many more. If you have never seen it, I recommend that you check it out.

Eraserhead (Max). The only time I was ever gonna be able to stay awake was in the daytime, but the cinematography is actually too dark for that and the light glared on the TV. :D I've had a couple false starts with this film, but I finally made it and I loved it.

Hanukkah (2019 slasher) (Tubi). The best actors were the ones with the longest careers. PJ Soles gave the best performance, imo. The main characters were all throwaways and knife fodder. I treat it about the same as I treat Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.  ;D

The FireAid benefit concert, live on Max. Comcast decided it was the perfect time to go out... nearly five hours in! I missed about 20 minutes live, enough time for Billie and Finneas to perform. When Comcast came back online, Max stopped streaming and took me back to the concert's program info page. Finally, during B&F's second song Max ended my replay stream with no way of watching it again. Was it taken off?

I'd never live streamed with Max before, and the experience had its crappy moments, but I did get to see 99 percent of the show. Quite a stellar lineup for this charity concert. Good to see No Doubt and the surviving members of Nirvana reunite (Dave, Krist and Pat with guests St. Vincent, Kim Gordon and Frances Bean Cobain). Joni was another standout. The Black Crowes brought along Stills, Nash and Fogerty. Flea got to play "Higher Ground" with Stevie Wonder! Stevie Nicks was yet another standout. Great concert for a great cause.

Stranger Things - "The Bite" (rewatch). Great acting all around, especially: Millie Bobby Brown, Brett Gelman, Maya Hawke & Joe Keery, David Harbour and Winona Ryder. Even though I knew the big moments were coming up, I still felt them. That's good television right there. During the big Steve and Robin scene, I didn't realize they were singing "Total Eclipse of the Heart" as Kermit -- Steve messed up the lyrics, and he and Robin messed up the melody and didn't even sing in  the original key. Plus, I forgot what year the song came out.

I haven't returned to Abbott since the strikes. I just saw Quinta appear at FireAid.

In the wee hours I decided to stream the Grammys, as I missed most of it because I was streaming the Saturn Awards. (Genre nerds have their priorities.) It was actually better than most Grammys.

I realized that there is a new season of Virgin River on Netflix. I figured I should refresh my memory and decided to watch the entire show so I started from the beginning.

The first episode of The White Lotus. What an offbeat show from Ned Schneebly! I love Jennifer Coolidge so far, what a character. Sydney Sweeney is fun. Steve Zahn is something else. And I have a lot of questions about Shane.

After falling off the horse, I'm finally returning to Abbott Elementary, starting with "Alex" and "2 Ava 2 Fest." Oh, how I missed the show! I thought I hadn't watched it since the strikes, but I guess I had.

The 1965 British comedy film "A Home of Your Own" directed by Jay Lewis and starring Ronnie Barker, Richard Briers, Peter Butterworth and Bernard Cribbins. It was written by Lewis and Johnny Whyte. The story is a brick-by-brick account of the building of a young couple's dream house.

Outstanding! I have watched it so many times. Haven't watched in a while. Maybe it is time for another viewing.
