The next season of ITV's period drama Downton Abbey will be its last, its makers have announced.

"Inevitably there comes a time when all shows should end and Downton is no exception," said the programme's executive producer Gareth Neame.

Created by Julian Fellowes, the show follows an aristocratic family's fortunes from 1912 to the mid-1920s.

Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern have played the Earl and Countess of Grantham since the show began in 2010.

"Downtown Abbey" sounds like the loose girl in the neighborhood.  ;D

Whilst I loved the last season, the ones prior didn't meet up to usual standards. I preferred the ye olde Downton of the 1st series. The series as a whole sped along through the decades far too quick.

And a friend of mine first thought it was called "Downtown Cabbie"  :D

"We're not in the least bit sentimental yet," Hugh Bonneville tells Meredith Blake, who's been invited onto the set of Downton Abbey, as the cast film the final series.

In fact, its stiff upper lips all round, as show creator Julian Fellowes declares: "Nothing lasts forever, and you want to leave when they're still sorry you're going".

The only person whose mask slips is Joanne Froggatt - aka lady's maid Anna Bates.

"I feel like I've got a lot more to give, and it'll be nice to be free to do that again," she says, "but at the same time, I will cry on the last day".

Downton Abbey actor Hugh Bonneville has said it would have been "a misstep" for the period drama to have gone on beyond its forthcoming sixth series.

We are late comers to Downton Abbey. We started watching it a few months ago and basically binged watch the entire series and then we watched the first movie. We will wait for this movie when it comes on some streaming network.
