Dame Joan Plowright, acclaimed Tony-winning actress and widow of legendary stage actor Sir/Lord/Baron Laurence Olivier, has died at 95. She had been suffering from blindness for a few years and had to retire. Her many credits include everything from A Taste of Honey with Billy Dee Williams and Dame Angela Lansbury to Dennis the Menace, starring Mason Gamble, Walter Matthau and Christopher Lloyd, and directed by Nick Castle (the original Michael Myers).
She showed up in quite a few kids and family movies from my childhood, so naturally one of my biggest Joan Plowright memories is when she got stoned in the STeve Martin-QUeen Latifah comedy Bringing Down the House. I even immortalized it!

RiP Joan Plowright, you had a good long life and career and will certainly be missed.

She made her final filmed appearance in the documentary Nothing Like a Dame (2018), directed by Roger Michell, with Sally Angel serving as executive producer. It was produced by Sally Angel and Karen Steyn with Maddy Allen as head of production. The film documents conversations between actresses Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith (all of whom are Dames Commander of the Order of the British Empire) interspersed with scenes from their careers on film and stage.
I wish to see it now!

I knew her best as Mrs. Wilson in that 90s Dennis the Menace movie and also for her brief appearance as a teacher in Last Action Hero. R.I.P.
