Subject: Film director David Lynch dies at 78
Written By: Philip Eno on 01/16/25 at 1:06 pm
David Lynch, the writer-filmmaker whose works include Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, has died aged 78.
Lynch's death was announced on his Facebook page by his family.
"There's a big hole in the world now that he's no longer with us," the post said.
"But, as he would say, 'Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.' … It's a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way."
Lynch received three best director Oscar nominations throughout his career for his work on Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man and Mulholland Drive.
His last major project was Twin Peaks: The Return, which was broadcast in 2017, and continued the TV series that ran for two seasons in the early 1990s.
Lynch revealed in August last year he was battling emphysema, a chronic lung disease, from "many years of smoking".
The director said that, despite the diagnosis, he was in "excellent shape" and would "never retire".

Love Twin Peaks. He also directed the original Dune film in the 80's.

This is a huge loss.
My earliest real exposure to Lynch was catching Eraserhead late night on cable with low audio. I wouldn't say I properly watched it, but it was a bit too weird for me at the time. But now I'm planning to watch it on Max.
I may or may not have seen Mulholland Drive, and/or may or may not be confusing it with Cold Creek Manor, which I definitely have seen, or Gosford Park, which I'm sure I haven't.
The earliest film of his I had ever heard of was The Straight Story. I never saw that one.
With all this being said, I know Lynch best for Twin Peaks. Great show. I watched the first two seasons just before they left Netflix, and Fire Walk with Me on (HBO) Max. (I have yet to see The Return.) Kyle MacLachlan is great as Dale Cooper, and Ray Wise is hilariously over the top as Leland Palmer, even when he's doing horrible things.
I only know for certain I've seen Twin Peaks and Fire Walk with Me. I've had Lost Highway on Criterion Blu-ray since 2022, and never got around to watching it. I'm editing a short film I made over the summer that is very Lynchian. So I'm definitely gonna dedicate it to him.

He was also very seriously into Transcendental Mediation and even started a foundation for it.
In recent years he produced & directed this excellent video for 1960s (and beyond) musician Donovan, who shares his love of TM.
