Subject: Dream a Little Dream for Leah Kunkel
Written By: LyricBoy on 11/27/24 at 3:33 pm
Leah Kunkel, sister of legendary songbird “Mama” Cass Elliot, and a notable singer in her own right, has passed away at the age of 76. :\'(

She did session work with Stephen Bishop, Carly Simon, and Arlo Guthrie in the early 1970s, Kunkel appeared on James Taylor's 1977 album JT. That same year, she appeared on Art Garfunkel's album Watermark. Garfunkel relied on her vocal harmonies for his subsequent albums Fate for Breakfast (1979), Scissors Cut (1981), and Lefty (1988), and he became something of a mentor to her, helping to get her a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1979. 8)
In 1968, she married American drummer and music producer Russ Kunkel. Following her sister Cass's death in 1974, Kunkel was given custody of Cass's daughter, Owen.

The "Cass Elliot choked to death on a ham sandwich" urban legend has long been debunked, and it is considered in rather poor taste to bring it up.
Snopes.com sets the record straight:
The official findings of the coroner's inquest were that Cass Eliot died from "fatty myocardial degeneration due to obesity" (i.e., a heart attack brought about by fatty degeneration of the heart muscle fiber), and nothing was found to have been blocking her mouth or throat. Cass Elliot had long been overweight and more than once undertook crash diets to lose a large amount of weight in a relatively short period of time; the prolonged, combined effects of obesity and severe dieting had weakened her heart to the point of failure.

A very catchy Leah Kunkel composition called "Walking Song" is performed by Arlo Guthrie on his 1976 album "Amigo", a favorite album of mine. Leah herself plays electric piano and sings harmonies on this. If LyricBoy had known about this song he may have titled this topic "Bye Bye Bye Bye to Leah Kunkel" or "Leah Kunkel Goes Walking" instead of a Cass Elliott reference which doesn't really fit.

... and Mama Cass died in the same room that was to be the same room that drummer of The Who Keith Moon would died in 1978, the flat in London was owned by Harry Nilsson.
