Subject: Tarzan star Ron Ely dies aged 86

Written By: Philip Eno on 10/24/24 at 6:54 am

US actor Ron Ely, best known for playing the role of Tarzan in the 1960s television show of the same name, has died aged 86.

"The world has lost one of the greatest men it has ever known - and I have lost my dad," the actor's daughter, Kirsten Casale Ely, said in an Instagram post.

Tarzan originally aired on NBC television network from 1966 to 1968, during which time the actor broke a number of bones and was reported to have been attacked by animals while performing his own stunts.

After retiring from acting in 2001, Ely became an author and published two mystery novels.

I have a painting at home that was allegedly painted by Cheetah, Tarzan’s chimp. The money went to a chimpanzee sanctuary.

As it turns out, the painting was done by a chimp named Jiggs IV who was likely born circa 1960, long after the original Cheetah went to that Great Jungle in the Sky.

He did pretty good. From his Wikipedia page:

Ely's height (6'4") and athletic build also won him the title role in the film Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975), as well as various guest shots. He was in five episodes of the series Fantasy Island; in one, in 1978, Ely portrayed Mark Antony in a Roman military short tunic and breastplate. Also in 1978, Ely starred in the Wonder Woman television series two-part episode "The Deadly Sting."

Ely starred on the series The Aquanauts in 1960–1961, in the western adventure film The Night of the Grizzly (1966) opposite Clint Walker, and later appeared in Jürgen Goslar's slavery movie Slavers (1978). In the 1980s, he hosted the musical game show Face the Music, as well as the 1980 and 1981 Miss America Pageants, replacing longtime host Bert Parks. Later in the decade, Ely starred in a 1987–1988 revival of the 1960s adventure series Sea Hunt as Mike Nelson, the role played by Lloyd Bridges in the original series.

In the 1990s, Ely's roles included a retired alternate universe variant of Superman in the Superboy episode "The Road to Hell", and hunter Gordon Shaw in the Tarzán episode "Tarzan the Hunted". Until about 2001, Ely made appearances on such television shows as Sheena and Renegade.

Ely retired from acting in 2001, but he returned to acting with an appearance in the television film Expecting Amish (2014).  8)
