Legendary Brazilian artist Sérgio Mendes has passed away at the age of 83 due to ‘long Covid’. :\'(

In 1983, he joined Herb Alpert's A&M records and enjoyed success with a self-titled album and several follow-up albums, all of which received considerable adult contemporary airplay with charting singles. "Never Gonna Let You Go", featuring vocals by Joe Pizzulo and Leeza Miller, equalled the success of his 1968 single "The Look of Love" by reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; it also spent four weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart. 8)

My favorite was "Never Gonna Let You Go".
Yeah that was a nice song. Have you listened to any of his older songs?

My favorite was "Never Gonna Let You Go".
My only problem with that song… and many other “Sergio Mendes” songs.. is that he did not sing it, and the singers got very little billing.

His heyday was the 1960s. Until it was mentioned here I had forgotten he had something of a return in the 80s. It was quite exciting to hear Brazilian music on the top 40 airwaves in the 60s. Things were wide open. Radio was playing rock, folk, Brazilian, soul, r&b, psychedelia...very exciting times! :-*

I really liked his song Olympia that was written for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. It peaked at US #58 and was sung by Joe Pizzulo, who had previously sung on Never Gonna Let You Go, and also featured backing vocals by James Ingram, Jeffrey Osborne, and Lani Hall (the wife of Herb Alpert)

That was the thing with his later songs (particularly from that era).
No, I don't think I did.
Well, he had some really great music in his heyday, which was the 1960s, when he became internationally famous.. with the Brasil 66. (I know, that’s before my time, but I happen to know some of it, and I really like it.)

He did a lot more of the compsing and writing rather than singing. Here are a few of my favorites.
Around the same time as Never Gonna Let You Go and from the same album as Olympia titled Confetti:

A more recent one from his 2009 album, Bom Tempo:
