Legendary saxophonist David Sanborn, who made countless session appearances particularly in the 1980s, has passed away at the age of 78 from prostrate cancer. :\'(

Sanborn was a highly regarded session player from the late 1960s onwards, playing with an array of well-known artists, such as James Brown, Bryan Ferry, Michael Stanley, Eric Clapton, Bobby Charles, Cat Stevens, Roger Daltrey, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Jaco Pastorius, the Brecker Brothers, Michael Franks, Kenny Loggins, Casiopea, Players Association, David Bowie, Todd Rundgren, Bruce Springsteen, Little Feat, Tommy Bolin, Bob James, James Taylor, Al Jarreau, Pure Prairie League, Kenny G, Loudon Wainwright III, George Benson, Joe Beck, Donny Hathaway, Elton John, Gil Evans, Carly Simon, Guru, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Kenny Garrett, Roger Waters, Steely Dan, Ween, the Eagles, Grateful Dead, Nena, Hikaru Utada, The Rolling Stones, Ian Hunter, and Toto. 8)

Two of his most recognizable sax appearances were on the 1980 hit Let Me Love You Tonight by Pure Prairie League and the 1985 UK hit Don't Stop the Dance by Bryan Ferry. Both excellent songs featuring his memorable sax work.

Some of my favorite work of his is from Ian Hunter of Mott The Hoople's 1976 album solo album "All American Alien Boy". Jaco Pastorius is on it too, as are Queen on background vocals. Queen used to open for Mott all the time in the 70s. Today's re-written history that Queen was some kind of huge thing out of the box is a fallacy and revisionist history at it's worst.
