Subject: Karl Wallinger: Whole of the Moon musician dies aged 66

Written By: Philip Eno on 03/12/24 at 4:11 am

Karl Wallinger, the Welsh-born musician who played on hits including The Waterboys' The Whole of the Moon, has died aged 66.

The multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, who also fronted solo project World Party, died on Sunday.

Paying tribute, Waterboys frontman Mike Scott said Wallinger was one of the "finest musicians I've ever known".

No cause of death has yet been announced.

The Waterboys sadly never charted any hits in the US, but they did have minor success here in Canada, where The Whole of the Moon peaked at #71.  It's such a fantastic song, it might be in my Top 100 favourites of the 80s!

He is probably better known in the US for his band World Party where their song Ship of Fools reached US #27 in 1987

R.I.P. to Karl

I saw The Waterboys with Karl Wallinger in a club here in 1985. One of the best things I ever saw. I saw them and their ever changing lineups many times after that, but that first time was something special.

By the by, I'll tell you why the Waterboys only reached "a certain level" here in the US. It's because Mike Scott-to his eternal credit-was just too damn uncompromising. He wouldn't play the game, he wouldn't do the videos (or at least not the "video-ish" videos) during the height of the MTV era, he followed his muse and changed musical styles as frequently as some people change their socks. Believe it or not, at one time The Waterboys were poised to be "the Next U2" (for whatever THAT'S worth) but Scott just wouldn't play the game. And, in the end he (and we as listeners/fans) are much better off for it. He's got his artistic integrity and he's still got his soul.
