Subject: Another Late Report: Yoshio Yoda Finally Departs Taratupa
Written By: LyricBoy on 01/28/24 at 7:27 am
Not sure how we missed this one last year…. 1960s actor Yoshio Yoda, who hit the big time portraying Japanese POW Fuji Kobaishi in the war comedy series McHale’s Navy, passed away on January 13th of last year at the age of 88. :\'(

On the series, “Fuji” was a sailor from the Imperial Navy, who deserted and was discovered by McHale’s crew. They took a liking to him and he essentially became their servant for the rest of the war. ;D
He had few acting jobs outside of McHale although he did have a part in 1962’s The Horizontal Lieutenant, and a guest role on Love American Style 8). He was typically cast as ‘the Japanese guy’ in his roles.
He was the next-to-the-last survivor of the ill-fated McHale cast. The only cast member left on our side of the grass these days is actor John Wright, who portrayed sailor Willy Moss.
