Famed Canadian film maker and producer Norman Jewison has died aged 97, his publicist has announced.

The three-time Oscar nominee for best director passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Jeff Sanderson said. He provided no further details.

Jewison directed classics such as Moonstruck, In The Heat Of The Night, and Fiddler on the Roof.

I remember seeing his film of "Jesus Christ Superstar" in a movie theater in 1973 when it was new and being intrigued by his treatment of it. You know, a bunch of hippie actors showing up in the desert in a bus and then (almost) everybody just taking off in the bus at the end, etc. Even though the original "rock opera" album from 1970 was far better musically and still remains the best of any performance of it done since.

That guy ted Neeley who played Jesus in the movie still goes around playing Jesus. Talk about milking it. Jesus is said to have died at around 33 years of age and this Neeley has got to be in his 80s by now!

When I first saw it (in a theatre), I remember being disappointed in it. I don't recall why. I rewatched it maybe about 5 years ago or so and thought it was really good.

Saw that one in a theatre, too. My mother took my entire 9th birthday party to see it. Those were the days when you could bring a birthday party to the movies without having to take out a loan.
