Subject: Mary Poppins actress Glynis Johns dies aged 100

Written By: Philip Eno on 01/04/24 at 4:12 pm

Glynis Johns, known best for her role as suffragette mother Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins, has died at the age of 100.

The British actress, whose career spanned more than sixty years, died in Los Angeles on Thursday, her manager confirmed.

She appeared in dozens of films and was also an accomplished theatre performer.

Her manager Mitch Clem said in a statement her death was a "sombre day for Hollywood".

I always loved her. When I was a teen, I had the album of her in A Little Night Music.

If i were Jude Barsi, I'd start to believe that the universe had it in for me. Three of her live action characters are orphaned, neglected or abused (FV, PB, C & L), one is frozen in a moment of time right before she and her family die in a Soviet nuclear strike (TTZ '85), one of her animated characters is often in great peril (the theatrical TLBT) and the other is kidnapped by an anthropomorphic feline gangster because of her Dr. Doolittle ability (ADGTH).

What does this have to do with Glynis Johns?

Good question. I have noticed rather unusual (for lack of better word) posts from this user.

Anyways, RiP to Glynis. :\'( I have seen the Mary Poppins film.

Thames probably meant to say Glynis Johns or someone else instead of Jude Barsi. If there is a Jude Barsi, I never heard of him and he sounds insane.

Well, there was a Judith Barsi, who was a child actress notable for doing voice-acting in two Don Bluth animated films of the late 1980s; she was killed at age 10 in 1988 in a homicide. :\'( I don't know if anyone ever referred to her as "Jude" though. And I'm not sure what she has to do with Glynis Johns either.

With Glynis John's' death, the oldest living Oscar winner is now Eva Marie Saint, who forty years ago in 1984 was in "Fatal Vision" with Judith Barsi. Hence why i mentioned in passing that Ms. Saint has outlived her young co-star by 36 years (1988-2024).

Back to Glynis Johns.

Here she is in A Little Night Music. Send in the Clowns. I don't like Judy Collins version of this song because I love how Glynis sings it.

I like this version too, but I also liked Judy Collins' song. Both are an acquired taste.

BTW, who was the actor that played the butler that was behind Glynis.

The butler? He was not a butler in A Little Night Music-the character was Frederick (the leading male role) played by Len Cariou who has been in just about everything from Sweeney Todd to Death Wish. His résumé reads like the Encyclopedia Britannica. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Len_Cariou

He looked like a butler, so my apologies.

Yeah, the cast of Mary Poppins has not had very good luck. Only a couple of them still survive. :-\\

...and Richard M. Sherman (aged 95), he co-wrote the songs for "Mary Poppins" with his brother  Robert B. Sherman.

The forums over at Nitrateville notes that three adult cast members, who were also adults at the time, living almost 60 years after their film must be some sort of record:

Very unusual indeed.

The entire main cast of Hogan’s Heroes are all gone, despite that series coming out well after Mary Poppins did.  :-\\

Again, i do wonder how many classic TV or movie actors would be around in 2024 if smoking and drinking had been severely campaigned against and ostracized earlier?

The Australian federal parliament has lost only one serving MP to a natural death since the parliament that was elected in 1980 (Don Randall in 2015). Compare that to the 1951 parliament which saw ten deaths including Ben Chifley and Billy Hughes. A big factor is that people drink and smoke less.

Again, i was expanding on what i said upthread about what those at Nitrateville said about how unusual it is for multiple adult cast members of a film to last this long after its release. Lyric Boy also brought up HH.

Maybe thames meant to post this to the David Soul thread. David smoked 3 packs a day for most of his life, and ultimately had to have a lung removed. That and fairly heavy alcohol usage probably didn’t help his longevity, although he did make it to 80 years old, not too bad.

As i said i was just expanding on how Nitrateville forums said about Mary Poppins that three adult cast members (who were also adults when they made their film) lasting six decades is unusual and i thought how many other films or tv shows would have more cast members left in 2024 too if smoking and drinking had not happened. I am on the autism Spectrum and i had an infant subarachnoid hemorrhage. My mind wanders and i tend to ramble. Again, i apologize. It is stroke damage and neuro divergence.
