Allan Peter Stanley Kowbel, known professionally as Chad Allan, a founding member of the Canadian rock band The Guess Who, died at the age of 80. This one actually happened November 21, 2023 but I didn't see a topic on it.
After starting as Allan and the Silvertones in 1958, he changed the group name to Chad Allan and the Reflections in 1962, and then Chad Allan and the Expressions in 1963. Two years later, they became The Guess Who when a radio station promoted the band as Guess Who? in an attempt to fool the public into thinking they were a British invasion band.
Their first hit as The Guess Who was a cover of the Johnny Kidd song Shakin' All Over which peaked at #1 in Canada and became their only US Hot 100 hit to feature Chad on vocals, where it peaked at US #22. After 3 more Top 40 hits in Canada, he departed the band and was replaced on lead vocal duties by Burton Cummings.
Chad was also a founding member of a band called Brave Belt in 1971 with his former Guess Who bandmate Randy Bachman. They released 2 albums and had 4 hits in Canada, before Chad left and the band changed their name to Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

I was unaware that he passed away last week. :o Maybe it wasn’t publicly announced at first?

When he left the Guess Who and Burton Cummings took over, the band’s sound changed.
Makes one wonder what could have been, if they had more Kowbel.

I think if Chad Allan had of stayed with The Guess Who as the lead singer, they might not have had the success they did with Burton. Also, BTO might not have existed

Back when I was in school, a buddy and I had a game called “Guess Who Died”. You would ask the “challenge question” (guess who died?).
If the respondent did not know, they “lost”. If they named somebody else who just died and the questioner hadn’t heard that, it was a “tie”. Otherwise if they gave the correct answer of the dead person’s name, they “won”.
My biggest win in the game was when Pope JP1 died. I asked my buddy the question, and he whiffed. When I said “the Pope died”, he called fowl, said “that doesn’t count. He’s been dead for like a month.” I then said “Yeah I know, but the new guy is dead too.” Classic round in the game of Guess Who Died.
Probably explains why I follow this message board. :D
