Subject: Bill Hayden (1933-2023)

Farewell to Bill Hayden, Whitlam government Treasurer, Opposition Leader, Hawke government Foreign Minister and Governor-General. Like Kim Beazley, he would have been a great Labor Prime Minister, but he had no luck. I still have a campaign badge from the 1980 election, which Hayden lost to Malcolm Fraser.
He might well have won in 1983, but agreed to stand aside for Bob Hawke, who was certain to win.
Bill Hayden was the last confirmed one left from those elected to the House of Reps in 1961.
The earliest surviving member of the Federal Parliament (as in first elected the longest ago) is Bill Grayden (LIB, WA), first elected for the electorate (the British term would be "constituency") of Swan in 1949. After that, there is no one left until you reach Senator Doug McClelland (LAB, NSW) whose term commenced in July 1962.
