Folk singer Roger Whittaker, famous for his 1969 hit song Durham Town and expert whistling, has died at the age of 87.

His other hits included The Last Farewell and New World in the Morning, and he sold nearly 50 million records around the world, his website said.

After starting in folk clubs, his successes included the Skye Boat Song, a duet with Des O'Connor in 1986. He was also able to sing in several languages. They included German and French, allowing him to appeal to a wide audience, especially in Germany, where he was particularly popular. Whittaker was born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1936, while his parents were from Staffordshire, England.

I have to admit, I never got this guy. From what I gather, he was huge in Europe, but he was very little known here in the US. Until back in the late 70s/early 80s, TV commercials started appearing every second here, plugging a greatest hits collection of his. Those of us here in the US never heard of him, let alone knew that he even had any greatest hits. The commercials always showed him singing a syrupy song with strings about crossing the cruel ocean, or the cruel war or something like that. It was essentially an attempt to buy him fame in the US. It didn't really work, but I bet a lot of people, particularly older people, bought that greatest hits collection via TV.

Roger Whittaker was "your Grandmother's favourite singer".  And no joke, it's mostly true.  His music really appealed to the older generation and to my surprise, he had more hits in Canada than any other country.  If you ever look at his discography on Wikipedia, it was me that added in the Canadian chart peaks.  I actually have a few of his songs on 45, but that's solely because I love to collect almost any 45 from the 80s if it has a picture sleeve.

Whenever I go thrifting, I often see tons of his records on the shelves, but the one I see the most was a live record he recorded in Canada

R.I.P.
