Subject: Bernie Marsden: There He Goes Again, on His Own

Written By: LyricBoy on 08/25/23 at 2:00 pm

Legendary Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden, who played the awesome guitar parts on Whitesnake’s Here I Go Again, (he wrote the song too) has scorched his last riff at the age of 72.  :\'(

On Friday morning, his former Whitesnake bandmate Coverdale paid tribute to Marsden on social media. “I’ve just woken up to the awful news that my old friend and former Snake Bernie Marsden has passed,” he wrote on Twitter. “My sincere thoughts and prayers to his beloved family, friends and fans. A genuinely funny, gifted man, whom I was honored to know and share a stage with.” 8)

I imagine he’s up in rock heaven now, and Tawny Kitaen is dancing on the hood of his limo.  :)

Just for the record, he left in 1982. John Sykes took over afterwards. "Here I Go Again" was originally recorded in 1982 with the line "Like a hobo I was born to walk alone." It was re-recorded and glammed up in 1987 with the line "Like a drifter I was born to walk alone."

"Fool for Your Loving" (1980) was similarly re-recorded in 1989 (with Steve Vai), but lightning didn't strike twice (peaking at only No. 37) and Coverdale, already reluctant to re-record the song, ended up regretting the whole thing.

Early Whitesnake was more in the vein of Coverdale's former band Deep Purple, hard blues rock. Their famous 1987 self-titled album saw the band adapt their image and style to the glam/hair metal craze that was dominating rock.

Yup. And I preferred the '87 version much better.

I always preferred the ‘82 version.  8)

Although “Tawny” Kitaen was a nice feature of the ‘87 reboot.
