Subject: Glenda Jackson: Oscar-winning actress and former MP dies at 87

Written By: Philip Eno on 06/15/23 at 5:56 am

Oscar-winning actress and former MP Glenda Jackson has died at the age of 87, her agent has said.

Jackson became an international star in the 1970s, winning Oscars for Women In Love and A Touch of Class, and receiving two further nominations.

She also starred as Queen Elizabeth I in the BBC drama Elizabeth R.

Politics was always important, and she gave up acting to join the House of Commons as a Labour MP in north London from 1992 to 2015.

She later returned to the screen, winning a Bafta for her comeback role in the TV drama Elizabeth Is Missing in 2020.

I am very sorry to hear this. I liked her very much in the 70s when she was making movies. She seemed to partake in none of the empty glamour of Hollywood, the dismal glitter of celebrity. In fact she was very matter-of-fact about the whole thing. She didn't even bother to attend the Academy Awards where she won for "A Touch of Class", which I saw in the cinema when it was new in the early 70s. I also remember attending something of a Glenda Jackson film festival in an arthouse theater in the early 70s where they showed "Women In Love" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday". Absolutely NONE of the three movies mentioned here could be made today. They would be utterly foreign to today's Marvel superhero Disney mermaid moviegoers. Travel well, Glenda Jackson!

Sir Michael Caine has described actress and former MP Glenda Jackson as "one of our greatest movie actresses" following her death aged 87.
