Subject: Gary Rossington is Free as a Bird
Written By: LyricBoy on 03/05/23 at 9:03 pm
Legendary Southern Rock icon Gary Rossington, the sole remaining founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, has passed away at the age of 71. It’s the end of an era, folks. :\'(

Artemus Pyle is the only “classic lineup” member left of the band, (and only one of three remaining survivors of the disastrous plane crash of ‘77) although he was not a founding member.

Here’s a live performance of the single That Smell, which was the second song released in the final “classic lineup” album, Street Survivors. The song was written by Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins, after Gary Rossington crashed his Ford Torino into an oak tree along Mandarin Road in Jacksonville, Florida, :o after excessive consumption of alcohol and other drugs. Van Zant was thus inspired to write the song as a warning about the consequences of careless overuse of drugs and alcohol.
Three days after Street Survivors was released, Ronnie, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines were all dead due to the infamous plane crash. :\'(

The guitar work on this recording is awesome. Those guys really kicked butt in their short time at the top. 8)

I liked his work in the Rossington-Collins Band, too. I was a little slower than the Skynyrd songs, if you like the mosty jazz-blues rock sound.RIP, Gary.
