Fred Ward, a character best known in the films The Right Stuff and Tremors, died May 8th at the age of 79. Ward played the ill-fated astronaut Gus Grissom on The Right Stuff. Other noteworthy films include Henry and June , Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (it also ended) and the Tremors franchise.

He was legendary playing the role of real-life escaped jailbird John Anglin, in the 1979 flick Escape from Alcatraz.  8)

He was also in Swing Shift. Excellent movie. IMO very underrated.

He was also in The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult which spoofed Escape From Alcatraz.  He was so good

My earliest memory of Fred Ward was as a kid, seeing the VHS of Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins on shelves where he's hanging off The Statue of Liberty.  I never saw that movie until years later though.  First film I ever saw him in was Tremors in theatres, then I watched Big Business on VHS.  He was one of the best character actors!  R.I.P.
