Funk princess Betty Davis, who grew up in Picksburgh PA but went on to shape funk in the 60s and early 70s has passed away at the age of 77. :\'(

Davis first began making music under her birth name Betty Mabry, including her 1964 single “Get Ready for Betty.” Her name changed to Davis after her tumultuous marriage to Miles Davis, who then divorced her because he suspected that she was partying on the side with Jimi Hendrix, an accusation she has always staunchly denied. Knowing Miles’ strange and self-destructive personality, I’ve always believed Betty in that story.
After her funk career faded, Betty returned to the Burgh where she resided for the past 40 years.
