Harry Reid, former chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission who was immortalized by Dick Smothers as “The Senator” in the mob classic film Casino, has passed away at the age of 82.

Also sadly another real-life Casino figure, fellow Picksburgh native Allen Glick, also cashed in his chips back in August. Glick was a boy-wonder developer who secured financing from the mob to take over 4 Vegas casinos while he was in his early 30s, and was portrayed as “Phillip Green” in the movie. Soon he found himself in Deep water with The Outfit, and was powerless to effect change. After a few years when the feds came a calling, Glick ratted out informed on the very mobsters that helped him to build his short lived empire.

He was the Senate Majority/Minority leader for a while during his time in the U.S. Senate. (Majority or minority depending on which party was in control at the time.)
