Legendary actress Cicely Tyson has passed away at the age of 96. :\'(

She was insistent to not allow herself to act in “Blaxploitation” movies, or to play the stereotypical roles of hookers or drug addicts. And she had the Star power to back that up. 8)

I still remember watching the landmark "The Autobiography Of Miss Jane Pittman" when the first aired on TV in 1974. She was awe-inspiring in that.

A legend. Hard to believe she's gone.
I was introduced to her in the TV movie Ms. Scrooge. Back then, the idea of a female Scrooge was novel. I saw Jane Pittman in high school. I wish Roots had a proper DVD release; the current one is a mess, sadly. (The only DVD I've ever had to turn off 24p for. Even worse, the picture-in-picture commentaries are baked into the show and, to my knowledge, are impossible to opt out of.)
I've seen Ms. Tyson in a few scattered things throughout the years.

Board members who live in New York City can attend a public visitation for Ms. Tyson this coming Monday, in Harlem.

She had just published her autobiography Just as I Am.
Last Saturday’s Times had an interview with Cicely in the magazine section and her obituary in the main paper.
