James Lipton, dean of the Actors Studio school and best known as the host of Bravo/Ovation's Inside the Actors Studio, has died from bladder cancer. He was 93. Lipton retired from the show in 2018; in 2019, the show, now hosted by a rotating panel, moved from Bravo to Ovation and continues to air to this day, 23 seasons strong.
Lipton interviewed such prominent actors as Robin Williams, Robert Downey Jr., Paul Newman, Sally Field, Dennis Hopper, Glenn Close, Chris Walken, Harvey Keitel, Shirley MacLaine, Eli Wallach, Lauren Bacall, Tony Hopkins, Jack Lemmon, Meryl, De Niro, Caan, Burt, Hackman, Clint, Freeman, Redford, Jane Fonda, and Al Pacino. Sadly, he never got to interview Walter Matthau. Curiously, he never interviewed F. Murray Abraham, best known for his Oscar-winning role as Salieri in Amadeus, although such an episode was used as a plot device on The Simpsons.
Will Ferrell famously impersonated Lipton on SNL, notably in a sketch featuring Alec Baldwin as Charles Nelson Reilly. I was gonna post that one, but I could only find Drew Barrymore.
