Joey started out with the mob in the 1950s as a jewel thief and a juice loan collector. He quickly rose through the ranks to become its consigliere. In the early 80’s he was convicted of attempting to bribe a US Senator, and was sent up the creek for 15 years, but he got out by 1993.
He got into trouble with Johnny Law again in 2007, being convicted of the 1974 murder of a fellow mob associate in the famous “Family Secrets” trials that netted dozens of Chicago Outfit figures. By that time wheelchair-bound, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. :o. Before that trial, he went on the lam, but he got ratted out by a local dentist, Patrick Spilotro, brother of the slain mobster Tony “the Ant” Spilotro, who was portrayed as “Nicky Santoro” by Joe Pesci in the movie, Casino. Tony and his brother Mickey Spilotro were rubbed out in an Indiana corn field in ‘86.
Joey had a number of nicknames, including “Joey the Clown”, “Joe Padula”, and “Lumpy”.
