Subject: William Loud, Grandfather of Reality TV, Passes Away

Reality legend William Loud, patriarch of the Loud Family, which was chronicled in the 1970's PBS reality show An American Family, has passed away at the age of 97.

AAF was one of the earliest attempts at reality TV, much better than today's drivel.

His flamboyant son, Lance Loud, preceded him in death in 2001. At the time, Lance was one of the first openly gay TV celebrities, when most others were closedly gay.

I remember when that series first aired on PBS, known as NET (National Educational Television) back then. It was considered somewhat of a revelation. Of course we didn't call it "reality TV" at the time, since the concept didn't exist yet. We thought of it more as "cinema verite", which seems quite a bit more highbrow and arty. The series was also more serious and intellectual than today's reality TV, and of course it was far less vulgar.

Definitely. An American Family was a notch or two classier than today's reality shows like Flavor of Love, Bret Michaels' Rock of Love, or Badminton Wives of Poughkeepsie.
