Subject: Steelers Great Gabe Rivera Plays His Last Down

Storied Picksburgh Steeler defensive tackle Gabe Rivera, a.k.a. "Señor Sack", has passed away at the age of 57. :\'(

Gabe was picked in the 1983 draft as legendary coach Chuck Noll was attempting to replenish the Steelers' vaunted Steel Curtain defense, which was getting near retirement age. So valued was Mr. Rivera's talent that the Steelers decided to forgo drafting hometown favorite Dan Marino for quarterback to replace Terry Bradshaw, who by '83 was also running out of gas.
But the gambit ended badly. After playing only 6 games, Gabe was paralyzed in an auto accident and his career was over. Marino went on to greatness elsewhere. I remember seeing Gabe at the rehab center, where my Dad was also recovering from a stroke. Legendary Steelers owner Art Rooney visited the facility often, to lend his moral support.
