Subject: Bruno Sammartino Takes the Final Three Count
Written By: LyricBoy on 04/18/18 at 1:41 pm
Unrivaled professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino has passed away at the age of 82. :\'(
To say that he was legendary would be an understatement. In his heyday which spanned 1963 through 1981, he was professional wrestling, or what we in the Pittsburgh area, his adopted hometown, called "Studio Wrestling".
Every Saturday night we would tune in to watch Studio Wrestling on WIIC-TV, where Bruno would take on the big boys. Haystacks Calhoun (who weighed in excess of 600 pounds and who Bruno lifted above his head), Domenic Denucci (with his signature airplane spin maneuver), George "the Animal" Steele, "Jumpin'" Johnny DeFazio, and even against tag team greats The Sicilians, who included "Captain" Lou Albano. Legendary horror film impresario "Chilly" Bill Cardille and baseball hall of famer Pie Traynor would call the action.
Another local celebrity, Ringside Rosie, would always be up front, waving her rubber chicken against anybody who dared enter the ring against Bruno.
Bruno came to the USA as a war refugee with his family and was an 82-pound weakling, picked on by his contemporaries. But he soon took up weightlifting and started mopping up the floor with anybody who dared mess with him.
For more than 22 years he boycotted professional wrestling, as he was disgusted with the tolerance for drug use and offensive sexual content. This guy was the real deal.
Rest In Peace, Mr. Sammartino. Thanks for all the memories. :)
