The daredevil U.S. Navy pilot who went on to captain the Apollo XVII mission in 1972 has passed away.
His distinction in American History never sat well with him. In fact, it ticked him off for years that the government had cut the funding to send men to "God's Front Porch", as he called the moon, and spent the rest of his life trying to inspire America's youth to dream of returning there, as well as Mars, and who knows where after that?
Go With God, Gene. Someday soon we'll have American heroes again following in your footsteps.
