Subject: Self-taught US artist Thornton Dial dies

US artist Thornton Dial, who used discarded junk to make colourfully painted sculptures, has died at his home in Alabama at the age of 87.
Born in 1928, the self-taught artist's work dealt with history, politics and race relations.
He came to wide attention in the art world in 1987 and his works are held in the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington and the High Museum in Atlanta.
