Subject: James Brady, Presidential Medal Of Freedom Winner, Dies At 73
Written By: Doc Brown on 08/04/14 at 2:36 pm
The end of one man's triumph over tragedy came today when former Press Secretary James "Bear" Brady, who was left permanently disabled by John Hinckley Jr.'s assassination attempt on President Reagan, passed away at 73, after a long series of health problems. Those problems were blessings in their own way for a man who some witnesses and press outlets thought Brady would not live through March 30th, 1981, when the first 'Devastator' bullet Hinckley fired exploded into his skull, remanding him to a wheelchair for the 33 years he lived after the shooting.
Enduring multiple surgeries to restore his brain functions, Brady went on to join his wife in lobbying for tighter gun control, culminating in the famous 'Brady Bill', mandating the five-day waiting period and background check for a gun purchase, which Pres. Bill Clinton signed into law, and despite his infirmities, remained a full-salaried White House staffer for the rest of the Reagan Administration(After retiring from government service, Reagan also endorsed the Brady Bill in his friend's honor). Because of this. Clinton, a longtime Reagan admirer, awarded the Congressional Medal Of Freedom to Brady in 1996.
As for John Hinckley Jr., who was acquitted of attempted murder charges by reason of insanity, has been in a mental health facility since the shooting, he was given the bad news at breakfast today, and then the good news for the the American people: He's STILL not getting out! 8-P
Brady was surrounded by his wife Sarah, and his two children, Scott and Melissa, at the time of his death. Josh Earnest, the current White House Press Secretary, issued a statement saying that he set a new standard for the job that all who have come after him have tried to live up to. This patriot will be missed, and his service to America will be long remembered.
Your Pal,
Doc

I remember the assassination attempt. They announced that Brady had died. But, I guess he got better because a few minutes later they announced that he wasn't dead.
