Subject: Boxer Matthew Saad Muhammad dies at the age of 59
Written By: warped on 05/26/14 at 3:57 pm
Matthew Saad Muhammad has passed away at the age of 59.
Born Matthew Franklin in 1954, the Philadelphia fighter turned professional in 1974 before crafting one of the most exciting careers in the history of boxing. The blood and guts warrior won the WBC light-heavyweight title in 1979, halting Marvin Johnson in eight rounds, and defended it successfully eight times.
Muhammad, the cornerstone of a glorious 175lb era, had a habit of rebounding from almost certain defeat to triumph. His wars against the likes of Richie Kates, Yaqui Lopez, and John Conthe, are among boxing's most thrilling.
The titanic battles took their toll, though, and in 1981 he lost his title to Dwight Muhammad Qawi. His form declined after that and, like so many who live for the thrill of combat, he fought for far too long. He eventually retired in 1992, a shell of his former self, with a record of 49-16-3
As of July 2010, Muhammad was homeless and living in a shelter in Philadelphia.
He died at a hospital in Philadelphia on May 25, 2014 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
I remember watching some of his bouts on TV. Great puncher.
