I thought Hutchence died in an accidental autoerotic asphyxiation (?)

Ernest Hemingway ate a shotgun (1961).

Sylvia Plath took the gas pipe (1963).

Mark Rothko slit his wrists (1970).

Ian Curtis hanged himself (1980).

Maybe he did; but many sources indicate that he took his own life.

I even remember hearing about it on the radio when it happened; at first he was "found dead", but no other details were given.

Adolf Hitler committed suicide by gunshot on 30 April 1945 in his Führerbunker in Berlin. His wife Eva (née Braun) committed suicide with him by ingesting cyanide. That afternoon, in accordance with Hitler's prior instructions, their remains were carried up the stairs through the bunker's emergency exit, doused in petrol, and set alight in the Reich Chancellery garden outside the bunker. Records in the Soviet archives show that their burnt remains were recovered and interred in successive locations until 1970, when they were again exhumed, cremated, and the ashes scattered.

Accounts differ as to the cause of death; one states that he died by poison only and another that he died by a self-inflicted gunshot while biting down on a cyanide capsule. Contemporary historians have rejected these accounts as being either Soviet propaganda or an attempted compromise in order to reconcile the different conclusion. One eye-witness recorded that the body showed signs of having been shot through the mouth, but this has been proven unlikely. There is also controversy regarding the authenticity of skull and jaw fragments which were recovered. In 2009, DNA tests were performed on a skull Soviet officials had long believed to be Hitler's. According to the American researchers, the tests revealed that the skull was actually that of a woman less than 40 years old. The jaw fragments which had been recovered were not tested by the American researchers.

Yeah that was pretty grody. A .357 makes one hell of a mess.

The day it happened, many of the Pennsylvania schools were closed, and what with Budd being somewhat of a celebrity, his "press conference" was beamed live with no delay. The guys in the production booth were so busy crapping themselves that they forgot to cut off the feed, and so tens of thousands of people saw the whole thing live.  8-P

In Picksburgh, local station WPXI played the incident in its entirety during a follow-on newscast. There were a few people who complained and so the station edited out the last moment for further broadcasts.

I remember feeling bad about this at the time... Not so much about Budd himself, but I had a coworker named Dwyer whose brother (named Bud) had done the same thing a few years before, but without a press conference. Having to replay that again had to be tough for her.  :-\\

Montague Druitt (15 August 1857 – early December 1888) was one of the suspects in the Jack the Ripper murders that took place in London between August and November 1888. He was employed as an assistant schoolmaster at a boarding school, and his interest outside work was cricket, which he played with many leading players of the time, including Lord Harris and Francis Lacey. In November 1888, he lost his post at the school for reasons that remain unclear. One month later his body was found drowned in the River Thames. His death, which was found to be a suicide, roughly coincided with the end of the murders that were attributed to Jack the Ripper. Private suggestions in the 1890s that he could have committed the crimes became public knowledge in the 1960s, and led to the publication of books that proposed him as the murderer. The evidence against him was entirely circumstantial, however, and many writers from the 1970s onwards have rejected him as a likely suspect.

GG Allin.  It might have been accidental.  He announced he was committing suicide on stage in Detroit for his Halloween gig in '91 (I think), so the local authorities picked him up and shut him in the hoosegow for a few months.  GG died of a drug overdose in '93.  Might or might not have been suicide.

Wendy O'Williams, formerly of The Plasmatics, died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound on April 8, 1998.  She was 48 years old.  Along with her career as a punk/metal singer-performance artist, she also made a few porn films in the late seventies, including one where she shoots chicken eggs out of her lady parts (I think it was "Candy Goes to Hollywood).  At the time of her death she was living a quiet life in Storrs, CT, where she worked in a health food store and volunteered for animal rights work.

Shauna Grant, a young porn star from the Golden Age, also shot herself.  She was struggling with cocaine addiction and its attendant problems.  That was 3/22/84.  Grant was only 21 years old.

Usually when people OD, they don't do it on medicine to fix a problem.  It is an addiction and they just take it for the high.  Not all OD's are on medicine, either.  Other drugs are usually involved.  Whitney Houston was addicted to cocaine at one point, not meds.  The "accidental" part comes in with the fact that usually they are not trying to kill themselves, it just happens.

Addicts have to take more and more dope to get high as their addiction progresses.  And for a while their body builds up a pretty decent tolerance to drug levels that would kill an otherwise-ordinary person.  But eventually they get a stronger-than-usual batch of dope, or just decide to take a huge hit to get that  extra "kick"....

Then you have addicts who mix multiple medicines and/or drugs, and the interaction between the various drugs kills them.

In the end it really is not an "accident".  When you continue to take drugs and tempt fate, and eventually fate rings the doorbell, "accident" is not the word that comes to mind.

It was a precipitous fall from fame and fortune with coke-and-p*ssy parties every night to be the laughing stocks of the music biz in 48 hiours.  Myself, I could care less if they were lip syncing.  I thought taking away MV's Grammy because they weren't real singers was like taking away Mickey Mouse's Oscar because he wasn't a real mouse.  We're not talking Pavarotti here.  The vocals were but one part of an entirely artificial product for mass consumption.  The marketing was far more important then the musicianship and that was the nature of the MTV pop music machine.

Have they no shame?

I figure they were singers but they weren't.  They were entertainers who were allegedly seduced by the music industry.  And what was so bad about that is that afterwards the trash press started to focus on other bands like New Kids On The Block and they were like "okay well, these two got caught.  Who else is faking it on stage?"?

Dorothy Stratten was an up-and-coming Playboy Playmate in 1979 and 1980. She married Canadian sleazeball/pimp Paul Snider somewhere along the way. (Side note, Paul Snider was instrumental in establishing the “Chippendales” male dance troupe).

Eventually she got bored with Paul, and started partying with legendary director Peter Bogdanovich. Snider got uber-jealous and then killed Dorothy with a shotgun blast, then raped her dead body. Like I said, a real dirtbag. Then he did the only right thing in his life and ate his own shotgun.

Hugh Hefner laid some of the blame for Dorothy’s death on Bogdanovich, and after her death they had a running feud.

Stratten's murder was depicted in two films. In the made-for-television Death of a Centerfold: The Dorothy Stratten Story (1981), Jamie Lee Curtis portrayed Stratten and Bruce Weitz played Paul Snider. Bob Fosse's feature film Star 80 (1983) starred Mariel Hemingway as Stratten and Eric Roberts as Snider.

Bogdanovich went on to marry Dorothy’s younger sister Louise. Who was 30 years younger than him. :o That would be a record even in my family.

Speaking of suicide stories, I was administering a job interview for a position at my company this week. I asked the candidate “Have you ever had to fire anybody, and tell me the circumstances.”

He went on to say that one of his employees had made a racist joke in front of a black coworker and it wasn’t the first time. The company owner found out and was incensed. He called my guy… told him to immediately fire the racist dude.

My guy called the perp (they were in different cities) and told the guy that he was fired. Told him “you know we had this discussion before and I told you to never do it again. I gave you enough rope to hang yourself and you did just that.”

That night the guy hanged himself.

Carlos was in Chile earlier in the year working on his PhD. His first wife was pregnant with their first daughter and she wanted to go home-so they left Chile in July.  He knew if he stayed, his fate would probably have been the same as Charles Horman (see the movie Missing with Jack Lemmon & Sissy Spacek). Carlos didn't know Charles but he knew of him and they traveled in the same circles.

In which case "Freddie Prince Jr" is not really a "junior" at all. He's just calling himself that. Possibly to distinguish himself from his father. To be a "junior" one has to have the entire of the father's name. In fact, many parents who give a child the father's first name give them a different middle name so they will very specifically not be a junior. Because being a junior can be a burden or a diminutive.
