The man whose surrealist artwork led to the creation of Ridley Scott's Alien has died. HR Giger, who was 74, died in hospital in Zurich after suffering injuries from a fall.
Giger, who was born in Switzerland in 1940, was best known for depicting cold, futuristic relationships human bodies and machines and worked in black and white, mainly using airbrush.
Giger started painting in the early Sixties as a form of therapy from suffering night terrors and sleep disorders, and he was most inspired by surrealist Salavador DalĂ and Austrian sculptor Ernst Fuchs.
In the Sixties and Seventies Giger began directing films, including Giger's Necronomicon and Giger's Alien, which was released in 1979, the same year as Scott's film. Scott convinced 20th Century Fox to hire Giger as a designer on the film, despite the studio initially believing the artist's work would be too ghastly for audiences. Giger went on to design the Alien itself, its planetoid habitat and all four forms of its development from egg to adulthood. The design team went on to win an Oscar for its work.
Giger continued to work as a designer until his late age, when his work appeared in Scott's 2012 film, Prometheus. He is also credited on Batman Forever, although his design of the Batmobile was not used in the final version of the film, all three subsequent Alien films.

Wow. :(
His Alien design is an influence on a Chupacabra movie I'm planning to make.
I can see it now: Giger's gonna burst out of St. Peter's chest. ;D (It's the joke he would've wanted me to make)
RIP :( :\'(

The Dead Kennedys used Giger's "Penis Landscape" (NSFW) for the inner sleeve of "Frankenchrist" (1986), which led to obscenity charges, and consequently the dissolution of the band and the launch of Jello Biafra's spoken word career.
