Subject: Jazz guitarist Ronny Jordan dies aged 51
Written By: Philip Eno on 01/15/14 at 10:51 am
Guitarist Ronny Jordan, one of the musicians who spearheaded the Acid Jazz movement in the early 1990s, has died at the age of 51.
The London-born performer's death was announced by his brother and sister through a tribute page on Facebook.
Jordan's best known work was an upbeat reworking of So What by jazz legend Miles Davies.
The composition was also featured prominently on Guru's Jazzmatazz Vol 1 album, bringing jazz to the dancefloor.
Jordan's 1992 album The Antidote - which contained So What - first brought him to prominence.
Along with Courtney Pine, he was one of the few jazz artists signed to Island Records at the time.
He went on to be nominated for a Grammy in 2000 for his album Brighter Day, which was a top 10 hit on the Billboard jazz chart in the US.
Jordan also won a Mobo award for best jazz act that year.
Also in 2000, his song The Jackal was lip-synched by actress Allison Janney in an episode of hit US drama The West Wing.
He spent his career performing extensively all over the world and headlined a number of jazz festivals.
DJ Gilles Peterson paid tribute to Jordan's track So What on Twitter, saying it was a "surefire winner" on the dancefloor at London nightclub The Fridge "back in the day".
Jordan's brother and sister, Rickey and Denise, said that funeral arrangements for the musician would be announced in due course.
The cause of his death was not disclosed.
