I went to Twitter and that was the firs thting I saw. Not the way any fan of his wanted to start the new year. I literally wanted to curl into a ball and cry. :\'(
Him on the Fresh Prince was my life. (Do you know how many round, balding fathers I've put into my stories modeled after HIM?)
It really is just heart breaking and my prayers go to his family.

He was a great actor, and he played the part of Uncle Phil on "Fresh Prince" really well.
Not the way any fan of his wanted to start the new year.

I enjoyed him on Fresh Prince, He always told it like it is. What a fabulous actor. RIP James Avery. :\'(

Actually he was 68, but that is still too young.
I guess James Avery really did have a heart, even if miserly old Philip Banks didn't(did they ever prove otherwise?). I also enjoyed his performance in more recent years as a medical examiner on The Closer.
RIP, Mr. Avery. May your imprint on fans stay 'Fresh' forever.

Terribly sad news indeed.
I saw him at a taping of That 70s Show...when Kelso was an officer in training.
I just looked at his credits... he was a security Guard in Extremities (my favorite Farrah Fawcett movie) and he was in an ep of Cagney and Lacey...maybe I'll track these down instead of suffering through an ep of Fresh Prince

I feel strange saying this because people say this about their favorite actors or singers, but I do feel like a part of my childhood is gone. A bit sad really. I remember watching this show in the early and mid 90s.

I was also going to mention this but you beat me to it. He was the voice of Shredder on the Cartoon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Is it weird that Uncle Phil isn't the first thing I think of? As a crooked cop in 'Fletch' or the DMV examiner in 'License to Drive.
He was a great actor!
