James Gandolfini -- who famously played Tony Soprano on "The Sopranos" -- died earlier today in Italy ... TMZ has learned.

I never watched The Sopranos but this still shocked me. 51 is so young. Prayers to his family.

That's exactly what I thought!!! How many of us are there, do you think? And then I thought, (after "too young" and all that) I thought, "Well, they say it's pretty nice where we go after we die!!!" I'm sure he's happier than we are now!" :)

I was just watching the movie 'The Juror' and after it was over, the news was on TV that he died. He dies in that movie, but he's not supposed to die for real :(
He was a great actor, and always played a great villain

It was one of my favorite movies of the 90's, and The Sopranos made him 1000% more awesome.

I never watched "The Sopranos" but this news does sadden me, I saw a clip from "The Sopranos" on TV this morning, and yes he does look a good actor.

I did a Soprano's marathon this year because I hadn't seen it and it is everything good they say it is. James Gandolfini was Tony. I am sad to hear this, he was really a very good actor. RIP James :\'(

Fans of the show flooded the diner last night to pay their respects, but the booth was left as you see it.
If the final scene did not mean what I thought before, it certainly must now. With no movie or reunion ever truly possible, the implication is that Tony Soprano will spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder.
RIP, James.

Family, friends and fans have paid tribute to The Sopranos star James Gandolfini at his funeral in New York, a week after he died in Italy.
David Chase who created the show that made the actor a household name was among the speakers.
"You were a good boy," he said during the ceremony at New York's Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine.
Gandolfini, who was 51, died following a heart attack last Wednesday while on holiday with his son.
One of four speakers at the funeral, Chase remembered Gandolfini in the form of a letter to the actor, in the present tense, saying he brought the traits of a sad boy, "amazed and confused," to the role of Tony Soprano.
