Subject: Jean Stapleton "Edith Bunker" dies at the age of 90
Written By: warped on 06/01/13 at 4:29 pm
Actress Jean Stapleton, best known for her role as Edith Bunker in the hit 1970s' television series "All in the Family," has died at age 90, the Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday.
Stapleton's family said she died on Friday of natural causes at her home in New York City, the newspaper reported.
The actress won three Emmys for her role as the long-suffering wife of loud-mouthed bigot Archie Bunker, played by the late Carroll O'Connor, in the TV sitcom.

I want to say so sad but I would like to live to see 90.
I think she was very underrated. Everyone knows her as Edith but she was an OUTSTANDING actress. I think she was a better actor than Carroll O'Connor was. Here she is portraying Eleanor Roosevelt.

Not many cast members of All In The Family left these days.
Other AITF cast members now gone are Carroll O'Connor, Mike Evans (Lionel), Isabel Sanford (Weezy), Sherman Hemsley (George Jefferson), Allan Melvin (Barney Hefner), Betty Garrett (Irene Lorenzo), Vincent Gardenia (Frank Lorenzo), and Burt Mustin (Justin the old guy).
Fortunately we still have Sally Struthers, Rob Reiner, Bob Hastings (of Kelsey's Bar), and Danielle Brisebois :-* .
This was another one of those shows where the cast didn't seem to have much longevity after the show went off the air, although Jean had a fair run. :-\\

Not sure what you mean here. With the exception of Mike Evans who died young, the other ones made it into their 70s. Isabel Sanford & Allan Melvin died in their mid 80s, and Burt Mustin & Betty Garrett died in their early 90s.

Well I meant that there are not may survivors of the main cast members.
Burt Mustin was a buddy of my uncle, so he did not seem that old to me.

There was actually a rumor Jean Stapleton died in 1979. Actually, they killed off the character Edith Bunker on "Archie Bunker's Place" after Stapleton quit AITF. Stapleton did go on to have an illustrious career as a theater actress for the next 30 years. In fact, Stapleton was the first choice for "Murder, She Wrote," which went to Angela Lansbury instead because Stapleton was too busy with her stage acting obligations.

Exactly, they just had the same last name.
Actually, Jean's last name was Putch, and her maiden name was Murray. Stapleton was for stage only and was her mother's maiden name.
My Dad knew her hubby, Bill Putch.

The producers of Archie Bunker's Place wanted to bring Edith back as a ghost, but Carroll nixed it.

That was a silly idea. They could've at least had a seance but I doubt if Carrol would've agreed to one.
