Exiled Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky was found dead in his Surrey, England home today. Cause of death is unknown.
Boris was one of the old-school Russian oligarchs who about 70% the time were Jewish and lived a life of subjugation during the Soviet era. As soon as the Iron Curtain fell, however, gents like Berezovsky, Chernoy, Khodorovsky, Rashnikov, Fridman, Kolomoyskyy, and Abramovich plundered the wealth of the former soviet states and became absurdly wealthy. The other 30% were orthodox russians who similarly managed to loot the country. Yet others tried to do the same, but you don't hear of them because they ended up dead.
If you are wondering why the Cyprus financial crisis is such a big deal (for such a small country) one of the reasons is that it was a preferred safe harbor for oligarchs to stash their cash. I once was working on a deal for a client who was dealing with one of the oligarchs, and all of the other guy's corporations were all set up in Cyprus. It must be breaking their hearts that they might have to lose some of that money they stole. ;D
