Sad to hear Ms. Ride lost her battle with pancreatic cancer. I remember hearing she was sick some time back. I still remember her space debut back in 1983.

I didn't know she was sick so this came as a shock to me.
Rest in Peace, Sally. You were an inspiration to the 12 year old girl I was when you went into space. Thank you for showing a lot of us youngsters that you don't have to be a man to do the cool stuff like space. You will be missed.

Same with me, and how very sad. I think there weren't many people that knew she was sick.

Sally Ride was a lesbian. I sure hope Fred Phelps doesn't take a notion to protest her funeral.

Neither did I. I've been intrigued by space exploration since I was a kid so I remember learning about her when I was younger. RIP Sally! :\'(

Sally Ride was a lesbian.
NOT something you want to say in front of someone who had a crush on Sally when he was a 9-year-old boy. Another icon of the 80's who will be forever missed.
Your Pal,
Doc

So is that where they got the lyrics "Ride Sally Ride on your mystery ship"? ???
I'm pretty sure the song goes "Ride Captain Ride upon your mystery ship" ....
Mustang Sally's lyrics go:
All you wanna do is ride around Sally (Ride Sally, ride)
Mustang Sally was first performed (assuming Wili is right) in 1965, Sally Ride was born in 1951 so Sally Ride came first but she wasn't famous when the song was recorded so it's safe to say it's not about her. ::)

Snozzie is right, and the song "Mystery Ship" came out in the early 70's, probably when Sally was still in college, so that one isn't about her either. Perhaps one of those spaceflight-themed songs of the 80's was written in her honor("Lovin'Every Minute Of It", "The Final Countdown", etc.), but the only 80's song that mentions her by name is Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire", in the final verse:
"Wheel Of Fortune, Sally Ride, Heavy Metal, Suicide,
Foreign debts, Homeless vets, Aids, Crack, Bernie Goetz,
Hypodermics on the shore, China's under martial law,
Rock & Roller, Color Wars,
I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!"

RIP, cute spacey lady, and may your foundation continue to inspire thousands of kids to enter STEM careers.
(She did science in orbit, and she dug chicks. Well, at least I've got one thing in common with her. I'd sure like to make it two for two, but the odds are against me.)
