Subject: Dan Peek, Founding Member of the band America, Dies

Written By: Philip Eno on 07/26/11 at 3:03 pm

Dan Peek, a founding member of the popular 1970s band America, has died. He was 60.

His father, Milton Peek, says Dan Peek was found dead Sunday in bed in his home in Farmington, Mo., about 60 miles southwest of St. Louis. The cause of death isn't yet known. An autopsy is planned.

Peek sang high harmonies for America on hits that included "A Horse With No Name" and "Ventura Highway."

He had lived in Farmington since 1978, soon after leaving the band.

Peek was born in Florida. His dad was in the military, so the family moved frequently.

They were living in London in the late 1960s when Peek met singers Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley. They eventually became the trio America.

Dan Peek was an original member of America before leaving for a solo Christian Music career in 1977.  When America continued on into the 80s, they still made fantastic songs, and one such single from 1983, which became their last ever Top 40 hit, had one of the greatest SAX solos ever (heard at 2:27) ...

Wow the song is great.

I actually don't know that one, but I do know their hit "You Can Do Magic" from '82 (I think), which was a big hit in the States.

Ventura Highway, in the sunshine
Where the days are longer

America was one of my favorite bands growing up. Funny story on my 15th birthday a friend of mine came over with their greatest hits and I thought it was a birthday present, needless to say when she went home with it in her hands I was a little pissed. I later got over it and was thankful I got to listen to it.
