Subject: Ari Up
Written By: MaxwellSmart on 10/21/10 at 5:34 pm
The lead singer of the all-female punk-reggae band The Slits passed away today at the age of 48. Ari Up (née Arianne Forster) was John Lydon's stepdaughter. Forster started as a teenager in The Slits in 1976, and quickly rose to punk fame as the opening act for The Clash on their White Riot tour in 1977. Like the Clash, the Slits also bridged the gap between punk and reggae. Forster joined the Dub Reggae group The New Age Steppers after the Slits' split in 1982. The Slits re-formed in 2005, recorded new material and toured the world.
News reports are calling Forster's death the result of a "serious illness." I think it was some sort of cancer, but the press specifying.
