Subject: Journalist Daniel Schnorr dies
Written By: MaxwellSmart on 09/07/10 at 1:46 am
I think we missed this one. If not, here it is again:

He was just a few weeks short of his 94th birthday. I knew him best from his NPR editorials, but he also worked for CBS News in the Murrow days and did groundbreaking work on life in the Soviet Union. It was mere slander that got him onto the Nixon's enemies list, but he was there nonetheless. He burst the case wide open and read his own name on the enemies list in front of the whole country.
Schnorr was more involved in high-stakes politics than Alistair Cooke was, but like Cooke, Schnorr was an institution. He was always there and you didn't give much of a thought to him not being there. Then you realize, OMG, this guy is 90 years old! WOW! That's when I give thought to imminent demise. There's optimism and there's silliness.
My gramps was lucid until he died at age 100. The problem was his body was fried. By the end, he could still play an o.k. game of chess -- I don't know how, he was blind in one eye and couldn't see out of the other -- but his respiration was awfully labored.
:(
