George Steinbrenner, Yankees’ Owner, Dies at 80
By RICHARD GOLDSTEIN
Published: July 13, 2010
George Steinbrenner, who bought a declining Yankees team in 1973, promised to stay out of its daily affairs and then, in an often tumultuous reign, placed his formidable stamp on 7 World Series championship teams, 11 pennant winners and a sporting world powerhouse valued at perhaps $1.6 billion, died Tuesday morning. He was 80 and lived in Tampa, Fla.
....
Steinbrenner’s death came nine months after the Yankees won their first World Series title since 2000, clinching their six-game victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at his new Yankee Stadium.

Steinbrenner will be missed more here than LeButthead ever will be.
He helped the declining Cleveland Mounted Police as well as the Yankees, I hope his children can claim the most hated team. :\'(

Love him or hate him, he was well-known and achieved lots of things for the Yankees. And I'm sure his legacy will live on.

No estate tax this year (2010). The Steinbrenner family is estimated to have saved $500 million in federal taxes. Maybe someday we'll have a President Steinbrenner!

Can't believe they aren't gonna bring his casket back to Yankee Stadium. It's one of the things that you kinda just do.

What most people don't know now is that prior to his purchase of the Yankees, Steinbrenner made a failed bid to buy the Cleveland Indians in the early 1970's. He lost in a bidding war to another Cleveland area businessman. How might the Tribe's history read now if George had been successful in wrapping up *that* transaction? One can only wonder...

We'd have a great line-up and be in the playoffs by 1975 rather than 1995.
I just wish a Steinbrenner would get part ownership of the Tribe soon...or at least Dan Gilbert!
