RICHMOND, Va. — Jimmy Dean, a country music legend for his smash hit about a workingman hero, "Big Bad John," and an entrepreneur known for his sausage brand, has died. He was 81.

His wife, Donna Meade Dean, says her husband died at 7:54 p.m. Sunday at their Henrico County, Va., home, south of Richmond.

She tells The Associated Press that he had some health problems but was still functioning well, so his death came as a shock.

Born in 1928, Dean was raised in poverty in Plainview, Texas, and dropped out of high school after the ninth grade. But he went on to a successful entertainment career in the '50s and '60s.

In 1969, Dean went into the sausage business, starting the Jimmy Dean Meat Co. He sold the company to Sara Lee Corp. in 1984.

He just shredded up pigs and served 'em with beer,
He made pure pork sausage, bacon, ham -
At the bottom of that grave lies one hell of a man: Big Jim.

Tomorrow, everyone who's not vegetarian needs to get some of his bacon, sausages, and patties.  Fire up the grill, and have bacon-wrapped sausages (and bacon-topped sausage-patty burgers) for dinner.  For Big Jim.

I'm not waiting that long. Tomorrow morning I'll be having some of his pancakes & sausages for breakfast. I hope the company can carry on without him. And Foo, I hope that's inscribed on his headstone:

Jimmy Dean rocked and so did his various sausages.  8)

However I will not be scarfing down any Jimmy Dean products today.  Jimmy sold the company to Sara Lee in 1984, and then in 2003 they had the nerve to drop him as a spokesman.  They felt that he did not appeal to a younger audience.

I mean WTF?  It was JIMMY DEAN sausage fer cryin' out loud.

He started the business himself, apparently he was quite a fan of sausage and felt that his was the finest.
