Subject: Dutch Jazz Legend Pia Beck Dies
Written By: Henk on 11/26/09 at 4:45 pm
Dutch jazz legend Pia Beck has died earlier today at the age of 84. :(
Beck was an autodidact on piano and started her career in the late 1940's. One of her first recordings, "Pia's Boogie", turned into a classic. She was one of the first prominent musicians in Holland to step forward and publicly admit that she was a lesbian - a step that never harmed her career in any way. In the 1960's she retired from showbusiness to move to Spain with her companion Marga Samsonowski, where the two ran a real estate company and a piano bar.
In 1975, Beck made a successful comeback to the stage. She retired again (and this time for good) in 2003.
Her companion Samsonowski died on June 1 of this year. Pia Beck died of heart failure (if ever there was a case of a broken heart...)
If you've never heard of her, here she is performing "September In The Rain".
