John Hope Franklin Dies At 94
RALEIGH, N.C. -
A pioneer of African-American studies, Franklin also assisted the lawyers who won the landmark Supreme Court case that outlawed public school desegregation. Franklin's book "From Slavery to Freedom" was a landmark integration of black history into American history that has sold 3.5 million copies.
Franklin received more than 130 honorary degrees. His awards include the Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented by President Bill Clinton.
He broke many color barriers, including being the first black president of the American Historical Association. But Franklin also experienced the continuing sting of discrimination and racial slights. At a Washington party celebrating the freedom medal, a white woman demanded that Franklin get her coat. He politely explained the uniformed attendants would help.
