Ivan Rebroff (born Hans-Rolf Rippert on 31 July 1931 in Berlin) died on 27 February 2008 in Frankfurt.
Rebroff was a German singer of Russian ancestry with an extraordinary vocal range of four and a half octaves, ranging from the soprano to bass registers.
Rebroff was famous for singing Russian folk songs, but also performed opera, light classics and folk songs from many other countries. He was known on stage for his gusto.

Here he is performing Kalinka, a Russian folk song, and  Ave Maria.

I think his fame was limited to the European continent, and mainly the German speaking countries - although I know he has performed at Carnegie Hall.

He hasn't had many chart hits to his name that I know of (only one in Dutch Top 40), which hardly is a surprise given his repertoire... That doesn't help improve his popularity with the younger generation (  ;) ) either.

I probably have heard him before, but never knew his name.

Another loss of a great inging voice.
