He went where few men have gone before...I'm sure there were a bunch of Sherpas who went up there on a whim once upon a time too, but his was a great story.

Of course we consider him an honorary Brit!
My daughter was doing something about him at school a couple of months ago. I bet it didn't include what he said when he returned to Base Camp. "Well, George, we've knocked the bastard off."

Actually, he was 88, but I suppose that's a typo. ;)

True, there's not a lot of explorers and adventurers anymore, if that's what you mean. On the other hand: there's not a lot left to explore anymore...
I was shocked to find out my brother (who's only 15 months my junior) had never even heard of Sir Ed. :o

He was considered a living Legend In New Zealand where he was born .

Sir Edmund was not the first man to reach the summit of Everest, but he was the first to make it back down. Getting to the top is only half the mountaineer's journey.
