Jim Mitchell was a pioneer in the adult entertainment industry.
He and his brother Artie founded the O'Farrell Theatre in San Francisco in 1969, one of the first pornography emporiums.
In 1972 they produced "Beyond the Green Door" starring Marilyn Chambers, which became one of the most influential pornographic films of all time.
Dianne Feinstein hated them, and they didn't like her much either.
In 1991 Jim Mitchell shot Artie Mitchell to death. The brothers had struggled with alcohol and drug abuse for years. Artie's problems were significantly worse. Murky circumstances surrounding the shooting only warranted a manslaughter conviction. Mitchell was released in 1997.
Mitchell died at his Sonoma County home on July 12, 2007, apparently of a heart attack.
First Amendment warrior and hero of the sexual revolution or depraved murderous scumbag or both, in any case, there is no denying Jim Mitchell's importance to a medium that went from an illicit underground scene to a multi-billion dollar wing of the entertaiment industry in 20 years.
His passing is notable. Mourning? I'm ambivalent!

Jim ws indeed a titan of the porn industry in his day. By porn standards, his death is only eclipsed by the death of Johnny Wadd 19 years ago.

What about Linda Lovelace? She died in a car wreck about five years ago.

The Porn Industry considered her a traitor. Remember she became an anti-porn activist.

Meh, she was a gullible ole gal.
First she was a victim of the porn industry.
Then she was a victim of the anti-porn industry. Catherine McKinnon is a bigger prude than Queen Victoria herself!
They say the porn industry is scummy, but don't let that fool you. It really is is scummy!

What's even scummier is that she never really got royalties. Yep, she was a victim. By the porn industry and the Meese Commission.

That was the way iot was in the early days. The producers of Deep Throat made millions, and Linda got Jack.
Same thing for John Holmes back then. When he starred in the porn classic film "Johnny Wadd" in 1971, he got paid only $75.00. Later on though he went on to getting $3000 a scene. Unfortunately he was sucking about $4000 worth of dope up his nose and quickly his career went flaccid.

The tragic tale of being abused and used. The only thing Linda got was a sore throat. :-[

It would be the same in straight cinema if it wasn't for the Screen Actors Guild. I mean, the big stars would command high salaries, but 99% of film actors who are not "big stars" wouldn't get jack.
Ed Meese was scummier than the scummiest pornographer out there!

1971? I didn't realize it was that early. The porn industry is just as sordid and exploitative today, perhaps more so because it's 100 times bigger. A few big names we've heard of get rich but most just get STDs, hooked on drugs, chewed up and spat out at the age of 25. The prevailing myth is that "the money is really good." If you're 19 and dumb as a rock, $2,000 for getting (censored censored censored) in the (censored censored censored) on video by five guys seem like a lot of money for a few hours work. However, when you figure in the social stigma, the risks of contracting disease, and the psychological toll it takes, two grand is a net loss. Those girls say they like what they do, but I don't believe them.

Ed Meese was a porn-addict in denial.
Thank heavens for unions. Remember all the hell Jackie Coogan went though?

You're right Max. In the early days, even the big names got very little money.
But today if you are a Big Name like Ron Jeremy you can make a pretty good buck. Even Holmes reportedly made $500k when he did that one gay flick.
But you are right. Today's run-of-the-mill porn actor or actress gets very little money, and a free ticket to AIDS Roulette.
